Canon PIXMA MP476

Canon PIXMA MP476

Not good enough for office, too expensive for home!

Decent photo prints at good speed, memory card reader, PictBridge

Printed text not sharp, expensive, no ADF, no Fax

The MP476 is reasonably compact and weighs just over 6.1 kg. With a silvery grey and black plastic body with no sharp edges, it sure looks beautiful, but the overall build quality is questionable: the flaps are tacky, and so is the tray -- we wouldn't be surprised if either of these break over a course of time. The input tray holds 100 sheets, which is just fine for a SoHo or SMB. Both the input as well as output trays can be folded; this helps conserve space while storing the device when it's not in use.

The display flips open

The highlight of the user interface is the 1.8-inch color LCD screen that can be flipped open to reveal the control panel.

The control panel is easy to use

The control panel has just the right number of buttons to keep it simple -- even for a person using the device for the first time. Similarly, the menus are well-placed, and it's not hard to get around.

Almost every type of memory card is supported

Hidden behind a flap -- just below the control panel and towards the front -- are memory slots that accept a host of memory cards, including SD, MMC, MS, and CF. Memory cards inserted in this slot can be accessed using Windows Explorer. Just below this region is the inconspicuous PictBridge port (for direct photo printing from a supported device). We tried to see if a USB Flash drive gets detected on this port, but unfortunately, it does not.

The scanner is of the flatbed type, and can scan documents as large as A4 size. The absence of an ADF means you'll have to spend time sitting at the machine while scanning or copying a bunch of documents. The hardware resolution of the scanner is 2400 x 4800 dpi -- pretty high for any practical purpose. You can scan an image or document directly to PC, PDF, e-mail attachment, or any other application of your choice.

This MFD uses the USB 2.0 interface, which is the common interface in most systems today. If, however, you happen to have an older system with the parallel interface, you'll be in a tight spot.

When writing Reviews of Printers or MFD- primary importance is cost per print. The reviewer should give the hands on review with a table giving the Number of Pages actually printed by the Cartridge in Black, & colour & also the cost of replacement cartridges- so that the cost per page can be judged by the readers.Withour this info- it is only half a review.
