Blackberry Curve 8300

Blackberry Curve 8300

Frazier Barretto, Jul 02, 2007 1613 hrs IST

'All work and no play' is too boring, especially with 'fun' technology all around for you to play with. Now, Blackberry wants to play, but just a bit.

Good Screen, PEARL trackball navigation, QWERTY Keypad, 2MP Camera, Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP, Stylish, Price.

No Memory Card Provided, Memory Card not hot-swappable, No Protection for Camera lens and flash.

Multimedia

The Blackberry Curve touches the multimedia aspect of phones. It retains all features that the Pearl had to offer in terms of multimedia along with the Pearl's trackball navigation, at the same time includes new features like a 2 MP camera and a Media Player. The Media Player organizes all your media as per type, i.e., Music, Video, Pictures, and Ringtones. The player is standard with just the basic options that any novice would use. It organizes music by Track, Artist, and Album. The stereo headset did a decent job and wasn't complaint worthy. The headset provides clear sound and fit well in the ear. The video player was also the same standard. There is separate section of Ringtones to get a preview. You could also assign ring tones from the media manager. Pictures were sorted as Camera and Preloaded.

Camera

The Blackberry Curve has a 2.0 MP camera with single LED flash and a maximum resolution of 1600 x 1200 pixels. Images captured are sharp and bright. The contrast is a bit on the lower side, but gets away with it easily. It is sad that Blackberry decided to stick only with image capture and no video recording. According to the makers, you would probably see the later in their next offering.

Some offices do not encourage mobile phones with cameras. In such a scenario, the Curve is not ideal but you always have the option of the 8800.

Business

The Curve 8300 has excellent business characteristics and as usual, won't let you down in that department. Curve 8300's QWERTY keypad feels even more comfortable than its predecessor.

It is so because of the size factor which let your fingers cover the entire phone without much strain and making typing emails much easier. The Blackberry supports email attachments and you can view a range of file types that you would ideally receive in business attachments. Here is a list of file types supported: .ZIP, .HTML, .DOC, .DOT, .PPT, .PDF, .WPD, .TXT, .VCF, and .XLS. You can also view spreadsheets with ease as there are shortcuts to go to cells etc.

The Curve can even handle your presentations and browsing needs with ease. Though I'd like to use Opera, sadly it isn't supported. Nevertheless, the provided browser does a sufficient job and provides TLS and WTLS security options to safeguard your private data on the phone.

This new model of Blackberry Curve 8300 seems good for both leisure and work. Memory card is not provided with this but otherwise can a memory card be put in into this model. Also, I wonder what could be the price of the same.
