A single-chip DLP projector with a 2000-hour NSH lamp

Great quality, sharp images, light and portable

Adjusting the height and angle was a bit inconvenient

Something we realised recently - we've only reviewed one projector, and that too back in 2002! So we decided to do something about it and finally have our second projector review: the entry-level BenQ PB6100!

Technology and Specifications
The PB6100 is a single-chip DLP projector. DLP (Digital Light Processing) is a projection technology introduced by Texas Instruments. The core of the technology is TI's Digital Micromirror Device (DMD) chip that employs millions of tiny mirrors to reflect light into a unit that splits the beams into the red, green and blue components, and passes them through a rapidly spinning RGB color wheel. The rays then converge in a final lens and get projected onto the screen. Some DLPs also have a more than 3 colors in the wheel for additional quality, and the PB6100 DLP is one of those, having four colors (red, green, blue, white). Sometimes if you move your eyes across the screen too fast, you can almost see separate RGB patterns. The speed of the color wheel determines whether or not you notice these artifacts, and how much. The PB6100 has a 2X speed color wheel, which is a safe speed for an entry-level projector.

DLP has several advantages over its competing LCD projection technology such as a much higher fill-rate between adjacent pixels - comparable to monitor dot pitch - resulting in a much fuller looking projected image. DLP also offers a much brighter image, and a much higher contrast ratio - the difference between the blackest black and the whitest white of the image. The higher the ratio, the more depth and realism the image tends to portray. In keeping with the gyaan above, the PB6100 offers at maximum brightness a good 1500 ANSI lumens and a contrast ratio of 2000:1, which is excellent. It's minimum projection throw distance for a sharp image on the screen is around 1m, and maximum is around 10m. With these distances, and a lens capable of 1.2x zoom, the size of the projected image varies from 60cm all the way up to 600cm (approximate)!

The PB6100 accepts standard VGA input (which means you can hook up your PC), and standard composite video/S-Video (which means you can also use your DVD player or PlayStation with it!). It also accepts HDTV input, something we were unable to test, though. The native resolution of the projector is SVGA (800x600), but it can accept input up to a maximum of 1280x1024 - the standard upper limit for most entry-level 17" monitors. The output image is of 4:3 aspect ratio.

The projector uses a 200w NSH lamp with a lifetime of around 2000 hours at standard brightness usage. That technically means you can watch around a thousand movies before the lamp will need to be replaced! It also has an economy mode that lets you make it last for upto 3000 hours!

An extremely poorly written review. A projector review is going to be read by someone who is interested in projectors and knows a little about them if not a lot. The least the writer of the article could have done was google a search on Benq PB6100 and copy paste stuff. BTW Aalap, the `yellow cable from an AV set' is COMPOSITE video and not COMPONENT. The PB6100 does not have a component out. You can achieve a component out by using a D-sub (standard VGA jack) to Component cable. Please read reviews yourself before writing crap like `bisleri bottle cap' instead of important features of a projector.

Is it not true that DLP projectors degrade over a time period. The millions of mirrors lose their shine and the superb quality brightness and contrast become dimmer and dimmer. For the same reason I bought a Mistubishi LCD projector. Would be very happy if you could review that.

by Deepak Singh, Lucknow, on Mar 25, 2005 11:35 AM, Report abuse   Reply

A DLP projector gets back to the quality it was when you first bought it, everytime you replace the bulb (2-4000 hours depending on brand and model). Any and every projector loses brightness over the useful life of the bulb. DLP Projectors are preferred over LCD for video and LCD over DLP for presentations. It's just a matter of personal choice and both have their advantages and disadvantages. Why don't you just search on google and u'll get a million hits explaining everything.
