BenQ PB6100

BenQ PB6100

Aalaap Ghag, Mar 24, 2005 0000 hrs IST

A single-chip DLP projector with a 2000-hour NSH lamp

Great quality, sharp images, light and portable

Adjusting the height and angle was a bit inconvenient

Ergonomics
The PB6100 is quite portable due to the fact that its as light as most laptops - around 2.5 kgs. It's portable, but height and angle adjustment is only possible by turning the rear two legs and one front leg. The legs are essentially screws with rubber bases. For most of the time, turning the knobs was a pain because you can't use your two fingers (thumb and index) to turn them as you would a normal Bisleri bottle cap, for example. Here, your fingers need to be almost parallel to the table surface, requiring you to use either your index and middle fingers to twist it, or two index fingers from both your hands. In either ways, adjustment was quite an inconvenient exercise. We would have preferred knobs on the top of the unit that run down to the legs and adjust the height in turn.

The projector has controls on top of the unit. Everything like the brightness, contrast, keystone (for the geometry), h-size, v-size, etc can be controlled from here. There is also an infrared remote control available.

The lens has manual movement and can be adjusted directly from the top for 1 to 1.2x zoom.

The projector makes a very low amount of noise while operating " around 34 dB max " so those intensely silent movie moments will stay intensely silent...

Quality
The PB6100 projected brilliant, bright, and SHARP images at native 800x600, the resolution at which we carried out all our tests. For display calibration, we used DisplayMate, and it scored a perfect 10 in every test! We performed regular PC tasks, browsed the web, watched movies, played games like Need for Speed Underground 2 and Unreal Tournament 2004. Movies were flawlessly projected, all colors were great; nothing looked out of order. High-paced fragging in UT2k4 didn't make us feel giddy or puke from motion sickness!

Conclusion
We were very impressed with the gaming performance and the movie quality. Great performance and great quality for an entry-level set! At Rs. 74,900 you'll wonder why its called "entry-level" but the fact remains: DLP is not cheap technology. We've still got more projectors coming in, so we can't say if this is the best projector your money can buy, but its definitely a great quality product, and you won't be disappointed.

An extremely poorly written review. A projector review is going to be read by someone who is interested in projectors and knows a little about them if not a lot. The least the writer of the article could have done was google a search on Benq PB6100 and copy paste stuff. BTW Aalap, the `yellow cable from an AV set' is COMPOSITE video and not COMPONENT. The PB6100 does not have a component out. You can achieve a component out by using a D-sub (standard VGA jack) to Component cable. Please read reviews yourself before writing crap like `bisleri bottle cap' instead of important features of a projector.

Is it not true that DLP projectors degrade over a time period. The millions of mirrors lose their shine and the superb quality brightness and contrast become dimmer and dimmer. For the same reason I bought a Mistubishi LCD projector. Would be very happy if you could review that.

by Deepak Singh, Lucknow, on Mar 25, 2005 11:35 AM, Report abuse   Reply

A DLP projector gets back to the quality it was when you first bought it, everytime you replace the bulb (2-4000 hours depending on brand and model). Any and every projector loses brightness over the useful life of the bulb. DLP Projectors are preferred over LCD for video and LCD over DLP for presentations. It's just a matter of personal choice and both have their advantages and disadvantages. Why don't you just search on google and u'll get a million hits explaining everything.
