Your boss wants those reports right now, its Friday evening, and you can't find them anywhere, even when you had neatly sorted all of them into folders and made backup copies as well. You want to play a song that you have had for months, but you don't know which drive you put it in. Your friend comes home and asks you for a video clip that you told him about weeks ago, but its not where you usually store your videos. How much time do you spend searching for files on your computer everyday?
Windows provides you with all the folders you need to nicely segregate your data into: My Documents, My Music, My Pictures, My Received Files, My This and My That. But its still upto you to navigate to the folder everytime you want to save a file. At times you just need to go on ahead with work instead of navigating and creating folders for your project, as the break can also break your concentration. What if you could simply speak out the name of the file and have it pop up right in front of you? Whichever folder it is in, whichever disk it is on. AvaFind lets you summon anything, from anywhere, anytime. At the click of a button, at that very moment. It's magic!
AvaFind works a lot like the UNIX "locate" command. It maintains a catalog of all the files on your hard disk, and breezes through it when you ask it to. Since it doesn't have to search each folder on your hard disk, it takes under a second for it to find any file from anywhere. But unlike "locate", it doesn't need a separate "updatedb" program to run every few hours to keep track of changes in the disk contents. AvaFind's Scout Bot stays in the background and constantly monitors every file and folder and keeps checking to see what happens to what file, and makes the changes to the catalog immediately. The result is that you NEVER miss a file, even if you created it just a few seconds ago. For example an internet download that your browser forgets to ask you the location for, or a PDF that your browser never bothers to ask about anyway. Just hit the AvaFind hotkey, Shift-Esc, key in .pdf and you'll find it right there. The most recently updated files also show up in a seperate Scout Bot list, so you'll find the file there. You don't even have to search for it!

Hello! Ava find is really a great software...only one thing that bothers me is that It doesn't allow me to search for a file of a specific type, let's say music...whenever I write the filename in the search box, it returns all files matching the criteria regardless of type. A screenshot in this review shows search results for "benett" in music only. please tell is there a difference of version or I am not using the proper search method.

AvaFind is more accurate and more convenient to use (just hit Shift-Esc) than Google Desktop Search, while GDS indexes the contents as well (which AvaFind doesn't do).

Aalaap, GDS is the first such freeware that I used, and I am content with it; so far it has not made me end up in a "vilaap"; may be i not not so much demanding ! However, I think GDS is the best bet at least until today; unless i end up in "vilaap" one day compelling me to search for another search companion ! All such tools have, of course, their +es and -ses; the one that helps me best is the best.

Google desktop search also comes with a 38 years cookie which will phone home your search patterns ASAP. That of course is a big difference

Pros: Can find data very fast Cons: I initially downloaded the free version and found it very effectively.Hence I decided to buy the paid version and accordingly paid up US$39.95 and downloaded. However the download required installation of a "Product Key"; and this for some reason, I the installation was not being accepted. I sent several mails and requests to the technical support department but did not receive any response. So I am left high and dry, paying a fat fee and without obtaining the complete product.(When I once again tried to install the product key, I got a message that this download has been "timed out". What has happened is sheer fraud and I would like to hear their justification about their lack of response to my queries. I would not recommend this product.

I've used thos software for around 2 weeks now, and I REALLY got to say that this software is REALLY worth a check -- For all you guys with massive hard disks FILLED with stuff , this is the best way to go -- yeah, the downsides are pretty bad -- but can be worked around with .. atleast you DO know where your stuff is -- it kinda gets easier there -- Get this software -- i give a 4 and a half star rating to this software

There is a software called Cathy. Its from . Whats more it is 250kb file and its free. Two drawbacks 1. Doesn't index in background, but it indexed my 120gb data in 3min flat. 2. Doesn't index content, i dont need it either. But m8, it gives result of 120gb dat in a flash ([0]{})

Its (AvaFind) use appears to be extremely limited. Firstly, text (a specific word or phrase) cannot be searched, secondly, there is no search within search facility. Any other SW for general use?

Some time ago there was a review of Copernicus desktop search and I downloaded and installed it. Though I was happy with its performance, I did have a problem with system performance because, like you describe for Avafind, it too runs in the background, using up CPU resources for indexing. That might not be a problem on a good system but I was limping along on a P3 500 MHz with 128 MB RAM. Any similar issues with AvaFind?

Since AvaFind doesn't index the contents of the files, it has a very low overhead. We used AvaFind on a P3 700 with 128 megs of RAM and experienced no performance drop.

Any way google desktop search is better. Even indexes PDF and Excel and Doc and .... the list is endless. Indexes in background . But yes indexing takes a bit of time.
