Ultra-Portable computing has never been more confusing! Along with the Ultra Mobile PCs and Netbooks, we now have Mobile Internet Device's(MID).

Good build, A plethora of accessories provided, GPS module, Accurate handwriting recognition, 100 GB storage.

No maps for GPS bundled, Underpowered to run Windows Vista smoothly, No hardware keyboard, Expensive.

Ultra-Portable computing has never been more confusing! On one hand we've got the Ultra Mobile PC (UMPC), which is essentially a smaller version of a tablet PC. Though they may be lighter to carry around, they are not necessarily light on your pocket. On the other hand, we've got the Sub-notebooks (a.k.a. Netbooks), which are shrunk laptops in terms of size and features. But Netbooks generally float in the affordable price band of 18k to 30k.

Now, we witness another similar genre of devices called Mobile Internet Device (MID). Actually, Intel has coined this new term and technically these devices are similar to UMPCs. In the labs, I have been working on one such device from Asus; called the R2E. Let's see if this new wave of multimedia/productivity devices makes sense for the Indian market.

Bundle

The bundle that came along with the R2E took up almost twice the space in the box as the device did. Here's the exhaustive list of the goodies that you get with this baby:

Asus R2E UMPC with AC and car charger
EasySync USB cable
External DVD Writer
A set of conversion cables
External GPS antenna

Wired foldable keyboard
Wired Optical Mouse
Extra 4-cell battery
Carry case
Software CDs

This is the first time I saw a UMPC being bundled with an external DVD writer. Even if many of us have advanced from CDs/DVDs to flash media to carry our data, having an optical drive could prove fruitful at times. But having such a long list of accessories also reduces portability and is somewhat inconvenient when you want to carry it around.

HI Please check the Asus R2E article by Rohan Naravane, it says the system has 800 GHz speed, but this is highly unlickly.

Could you please explain .... what is a hardware keyboard? They have bundled a keyboard with the unit..... so what would you term as a hardware keyboard? something that you cant forget to carry along coz its strapped on to the main unit ????

Yeah that's exactly what i mean. They may have bundled the keyboard but it is an external attachment. I tried using it while travelling by keeping it on my lap and found it to be inconvenient to use. A keyboard (thumb-board, to be more precise) would have called for easier text entry.

Do i read correctly that the proccy is at 800GHz? Or is there something cooking?

LOL...that was taken from the official ASUS website. That's a glitch, of course. The processor is rated at 800 MHz.
