Rohan Naravane, Dec 18, 2007 1831 hrs IST

Today we've reviewed a BlackBerry-esque smart-phone from Asus; the M530W. Let's see whether this device is worth your attention...

Sleek and light, Very accurate Business card reader, Surprisingly good 2 MP camera, Wi-Fi.

USB 1.1 data connectivity, No office-suite editing software supplied, Insufficient RAM.

Introduction

People recognize Asus as being a respectable computer hardware manufacturer. Quite some time back, they also ventured into the high-performance, multi-functional mobile phone market; and are specifically inclined toward powering their devices with the Windows Mobile OS.

They have a handful range of models; mainly catering to the business-professional class, and support either touch-screen or QWERTY keyboard input.

Today I'm reviewing their BlackBerry-esque smart-phone; the M530W. Let's see whether this device is worth your attention...

Design:

Asus M530W has a stretched candy-bar form that gives a 'professional' look. It comes in back and white colours. The white model has a strikingly similar orange siding found on the Sony Ericsson W800i. The phone is comparatively slim and light. It's comfortable to hold (but it doesn't have a firm rubberized grip like the Palm Treo 750). The keys on the QWERTY pad are rectangular and are well-spaced.

The 5-way navigation rocker and the keys around it are well-sized. Other than the navigation rocker, it supports scrolling via a three-way jog dial. But unlike the BlackBerry's, the jog dial is oddly placed on the left-hand side of the device.

Not the best phone in terms of ergonomics, but the overall feel of the phone is quite acceptable. It's quite comfortable to carry in your pocket.

When there is WiFi ... why would someone want to use USB to connect with the device. I recently checked out MotoQ9 - this seems to be a much better option. Of course i would have to lay my hands on one before categorically stating it so ...

Well, since Wi-Fi routers aren't a common phenomenon (at least in India), many people would have to use USB for connectivity...that's why.

Why not purchase HTC Touch which is priced at 17K? And with better features and looks.

Touch is not Quad-band ... so you may not be able to use it when you are travelling abroad. Of course if you are an exec - who spends most of the time inside India ... it is a wonderful option. "Better looks", about features. ... well that is debatable. I actually prefer HTC-S170 to the touch

Played a bit with other ASUS P528 and having HTC Touch Dual ... I would say ASUS was faster in responding and some how ergonomics were better. Didn't have time to test this one, but bigger screen in case of HTC or ASUS P528 makes a difference ...

iTouch does not have GSM/Mobile capabilities...its just a video/mp3 player with wifi support.

Mr.Naravane or whatever, there we go again...this is not a review, just a copy paste of product info available at various websites. What have you reviewed here??? 1>Product Placement? 2>Time to download a file on GPRS for ex, 3>value for money, 4>comparitive models5>What is the actual talk time as tested? Guys, stop fooling people with your so called multi page copy paste of product features, and start doing a product review..!!
