Asus EN9600GT

Quite the same as Nvidia's reference card

Good build, single slot, good performance

No bundled games, poor clocker

So far, Nvidia's 9-series offering, the 9600GT, has received a warm welcome and accolades from everywhere. We had a look at an engineering sample last week; it's time for the commercial versions to pour in. Let's start with one of the better known brands in the country, Asus.

The Card
It seems Asus didn't have enough time to actually fiddle around with this one -- it looks exactly like the reference card we received from Nvidia, except for the artwork on the HSF cover. It's designed to occupy a single slot, and requires extra power via a 6-pin connector at the back. It has two dual-link DVI outputs and an S-Video port at the back, and comes with a bundled DVI-D to HDMI converter.

The Asus EN8600GT is clocked at 650/1800 MHz (Core/Memory). It uses a 256-bit memory interface and has 512 MB of GDDR3 memory. It offers full support for PCI Express 2.0, which doubles the bandwidth (theoretically) available to the card to 8 GBps in each direction, providing a total of 16 GBps of memory bandwidth. It supports a maximum resolution of 2560 x 1600, and also supports High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP).

Also incorporated is Nvidia PureVideo HD technology, which gives superior picture quality and smooth movies with 100% (rated) offload of H.264 video decoding from the CPU -- and significantly reduced power consumption. Additional features include full DX10 support as well as support for GigaThread technology, NVIDIA's Lumenex engine, Quantum Effects technology, OpenGL 2.0, Bad Edit Correction, and Inverse telecine (3:2 & 2:2 pulldown correction), among others.

Specifications

The Bundle

Here's what you get with the Asus EN9600GT package:
--Asus EN9600GT graphics card
--Power Cable
--SPDIF cable
--DVI-VGA connector
--DVI-HDMI connector
--Driver discs
--Printed manual

The bundle has all the right stuff put in, but a game or two would have made it even better.

nice card, very good performance with only 64 shader units i.e almost half of the 8800gt. i wonder why there is no shader model 4.1 in 9600gt..
