Prasad Naik, Oct 05, 2009 1800 hrs IST

    The ultimate portable media player

Wonderful design, unmatched UI, large 3.5" multi-touch display, upgraded processing power & Voice Control feature, excellent web browser, good audio/video quality, large library of apps and games

Lacks support for popular video formats necessitating conversion, paid software updates add to the cost of ownership

Two years ago when Apple launched the iPod touch, it instantly achieved the title of the best portable media player in the market. The iPod touch was nothing more than an iPhone with the phone call functionality stripped off, which means it still had the same awesome multi-touch display and the brilliant interface design. Soon enough Apple launched the App Store, which opened the door to thousands of applications and games on the touch. Few other players in the market could match the touch for what it could offer, and predictably, the touch is the market leader in its segment.

Now, with over 20 million iPod touchs' sold, Apple has issued an update to its fastest growing iPod to make it nearly invincible in every way. They first reduced the 8 GB model's price and introduced two new models of 32 GB and 64 GB, with a faster processor and a host of new features. We got our hands on the 64 GB model and tell you what has changed and just how good the new touch is.

Nothing comes near iPod touch.. I agree it doesn't support playing divx but seriously converting a 700 MB divx to iPod compatible file takes roughly 40 mins on a P4.. And you can't negate the iPod factor here.. I mean it's an iPod and it's Apple.. and it's just 12K.. I'm buyin it..

ahh good ol crApple! This thing right there is nothing but a useless piece of s**t chunk. Seriously whats the update in this...a LED screen faster processor? chuck that. What's the point of all that anyway? This thing needs videos to be converted etc etc. Cowon S9 seems like a better bet. Zune HD also but it requires video conversion as well...but I"m sure MS will release an update to enable Zune HD to play all xvid files natively. Coming back to crApple I must say that the new Nano seems good for the ammount of features it has. That seems like a decent enough player but knowing crApple what they do? They put a video camera in the Nano but you can't take pics only record videos oh boy! haha I just can't say anything more leave it to you crApple fanboys/girls to flame me I'm out lol

hey dude, think before u speak.. agreed this is not a drastic update but yeah, they upgraded the processor n stuff without increasing the price.. apple discontinues its older gen models every year when they introduce the new ones at the same/less price.. so now u get the point?? n have u ever even seen a nano in real life?? if yes, then u shud know just how slim it is n its not possible to include a camera in it that could take still pics as well because it needs more space.. the same reason was for not including the camera in iPod touch this time.. 'cause they could just not find the perfect space for a video recorder + STILL camera.. got the point?? the next update will surely give a camera in the iPod touch but obviously they will have to compromise n make it bulkier to do so.. and at least apple launches there products here in India.. Zune HD is availible just in the US.. n even if it comes to India, m sure people like you will not write anything great about it..

I have no idea why touch screen based devices are suddenly becoming more popular. Its not just the iPod Touch, but I think full Touch devices need too much care to be abused like an MP3 player might be. Also, isn't it actually difficult to use these devices WITHOUT seeing the screen to say, change the track or pause/play or any other function that you take for granted on "buttoned" players. I have used the ipod touch just for a few days, and my frank opinion is, although it makes a great video player it makes for a very crappy audio player. Dont get me wrong, its a great device, but somehow I prefer tactile response to the new generation of all-touch no response User controls.

hey, i have owned all three iPod touches so far n the iPhone 3G as well.. i can tell u, or rather bet that once you use it even for a day, u will think abt it for days ahead.. thrz nthng lyk these devices.. i have always loved apple, although, they often dont provide features that appear basic today but they equip thr products with features that may still look great after ten years.. as a gaming device, its pretty good, if not great.. why I say that is because this is not intended to be a console, its just a music player with additional features.. you will never get the quality of a real photographer's 12 MP cam on a Samsung or Sony 12 MP phone.. so whats the point of comparing iPod touch with PSP or DS.. as far as controls go, i find the controls rather better on the touch.. at least my fingers dont pain even after hours of playing.. as far as software updates are concerned, iPhone users get it for free BECAUSE OF A REASON.. they are charged through their contracts unlike the iPod touch which is an one time payment.. n even if $10 or a $5 bother you that much for some great add ons, u can get the updates for free as well, through the internet of course.. there are many sites whose name i wont mention here.. music quality is pretty good.. poor loudspeakers, agreed.. but earphone quality rock.. you will need "louder" earphones only either if you are deaf or u wanna be deaf.. now coming to internet, iPod touch provides the best net experience.. i have known no phone/music player on which u can connect wid LAN or anything else.. so wi fi is a must.. n these days, common too.. obviously, u cant get a 3G connection or GPRS/Edge on a music player, can you?? itunes restrictions are not justified in India, i guess.. why i say india is coz majority of the population, either download the music from the net or buy those cheap MP3s.. which i do as well most of the time :P.. but apple cant make special softwares for each n every country.. n the reason why itunes store isnt availible here in India is coz no1 wud shell 50 rs to buy a single song... at least as of now, no one would.. even the reviewer wont.. n also, the speed of internet connections is nowhere compared to that of Japan n US.. so how wud u download the movies?? they are more than a GB or so.. if u download in HD with the current internet speeds in India, it will probably get downloaded by the time the sequel of the movie is released.. so all n all, whatever good or bad, all is justified.. a must buy.. if u dont have the money right now, then save some n buy it when u r done... Great gadget.. ;)

also, u can always jailbreak ur device n get all the features in the world.. what other device can u jailbreak?? agreed, it voids the warranty but u can always force a restore in case it doesnt function fine....

it appears that the touch is a " jack of all trades, master of none ". it looks great but is uncomfortable to hold, gets scratched easily, it is a media player yet cannot play back divx/xvid files{ a most widely used format } , it has a web browser which doesnt support flash { found on 90 % web pages i suppose } and even some thing as basic as downloading a file, it is a great gaming device but yet willl leave u dissatisfied , it has a huge memory yet i cant use it for storage purposes...considering all these drawbacks i suppose it doesnt deserve such a high rating...and for such a astronomic price point..one could get a samsung jet mobile phone which can suffice the needs of both a media player and a phone for even less the price.

The flaws that you pointed out are just too insignificant compared to the big picture and the advantages far, far outweigh the disadvantages. If you are an owner of one of these devices, trust me you wouldn't even care about these minor things. As for mobile phones, technically you don't really need music players these days as mobile phones can do everything that music players can do and more. But that doesn't mean people don't buy them any more or that they are useless. There is still a market for portable music players and as it stands now the iPod touch is right at the top as the best player you can buy.

samsung jet wont give you the UI of the iPod touch.. it wont give u the accessibily of the iPod touch.. it wont give u the ease of downloading contents.. use the iPod touch n then say.. i have used samsung touch as well n yes, i love it.. but i love my iPod touch more...

oh and to add - no fm radio, no manual equalizers , bluetooth headphones will lose their controls and for such a price they dont even provide a decent pair of earphones !

very easy to solve...if you like to own an iPod touch go and get one, if you don't like it,,well buy something else.
