There's something I fancy much more than the iPod Shuffle itself: it's marketing. The guys in Apple's marketing have taken the simplest, most fundamental feature in portable music players and have built an entire campaign around it and even named the player the "Shuffle". Since the birth of portable audio CD players (twenty years ago, at least?), everyone has had a shuffle play function. So what's the big difference between Apple's shuffle play and the one you have in your MP3 player? "Life is random", "Random is the New Order", "Welcome to a life less orderly." The one-liners are smartly succinct, but what's to become of the Shuffle? That's a looming uncertainty...
The iPod Shuffle is a flash-based MP3 player, unlike the other regular iPod and the more recent iPod Photo, which have a 1.8" hard disk inside. The Shuffle has a flash memory chip, which has no moving parts and hence is much more durable and lightweight. And it's also so much thinner and compact than the regular iPod - 8.6 cm high, 2.6 cm wide and 0.8 cm thick! It's featherweight, at only 22 grams! If you are running at 800 x 600 pixels on a 15" monitor, then the picture below will be of actual size...
These three attributes - durable, lightweight, more compact - make the Shuffle (and flash-based players in general) more suited for an active lifestyle - jogging, exercising and extreme outdoor activities. Though I have a feeling it won't be the most important thing on your mind when you're suspended from a rope snaked through two metal holds stuff inside rocks at an altitude of several thousand feet. But... it's handy in case that happens. In fact, your Nomad Jukebox Zen even comes with a warning that specifically prohibits you from using the player in those conditions. So, if you're the lazy couch potato music lover, you really won't find much use for the Shuffle. But if you're really lazy enough to not want to get out of the house, then you don't need a portable player in the first place!
Durable, lightweight and smaller. But to have all of these qualities, you have to make some sacrifice. First and foremost, the storage capacity. With the iPod or the iPod Photo, you get upwards of 40 GB of space to store over 10,000 songs, but with the Shuffle's 1 GB, you can only store about 240 average four-minute songs in 128 Kbps MP3 format. Push the compression a little further and you can squeeze out about 300 songs at decently listenable quality (96 Kbps MP3 or AAC). While this may sound a lot less, it's the nature of the use that justifies it completely. Your jogs and workout sessions probably don't last for over four hours a day - and four unique hours of music is exactly what the 1 GB shuffle gives you.
Then, there's no LCD display, so it's difficult to figure out which song is playing and almost nightmarish to find a particular song that you want to play. But then again, a limit of around 240 songs will make you fill the Shuffle with only your favorite tunes that you probably know the full history of, let alone the title and artist info.

I have got an apple iPod 4GB.It was working all right till suddenly it developed a problem. The problem is that I am now getting a constant display showing "Disk Mode" on the top of the screen, a Tick sign in the middle and "OK to disconnect message at the bottom of the screen. If some body can help me or guide me how to proceed to perform the normal functions or the sourse from where to get the help for repair or adjustment if it requires the same. I shall be thankful.

You can easily go for Creative N200 1gb. This player has FM, voice recorder, screen and is much smaller than Ipod Nano. To match these features, it has an excellent sound quality. Cost is around 10k..

What a piece of junk. Spend a little more cash and you can something with a display, FM reciever, voice recorder, line-in recorder, and EQ (which I could not live without). The cut-rate sound chip this thing uses sounds like garbage, get something decent like the JetAudio iAudio U2. PS, iTunes blows equally, mp3 players should be detected as removable drives, like most are.

How did you land up with 4 hours of music? 240 songs at 4 minutes a piece would be 960 minutes and that is 16 hours on my watch. Does Aalaap's watch get through an hour differently?

A mp3 at 128k/sec comes to approx 1 MB/min. So 1 GB is approx 17 hrs. Looks like alaap's got it wrong...

If you are looking for a decent player then i have it one up for sale. I have Acer MP3 Player 256mb for sale. It is not available in India. It has great sound quality and build quality. It is slimmer than this shuffle. It has usb charging and the playback time is 16hrs. It really does play for 16hrs. Not a joke as other players do. It also has FM tuner + recorder. You may record using Line in connection or from a mic which is included or even ur FM station could be record. It has 5 Eq. presets. Yes it happens. Contrary to popular belief, rechargeable batteries have a limited life, and the performance degrades constantly. It depends on your luck on how long you can go without changing the battery, but many people have seen it die within a year and a half for ipods. With players where the battery is user-changeable, it's an extremely simple and relatively inexpensive process. With players like ipods however, it means sending the player to Apple AND spending $100+ to replace the battery.

In the US, at least, replacement iPod batteries only cost $29. Of course if you go through Apple... but that's like buying ram from Apple to. I would imagine, for a $99 Shuffle, a replacement battery would be $10 in a couple years. Myself I've been using my iPod for three years now.

Hey dude.... whatever makes you think the battery goes in 2 hrs???? My girlfriend got iPod shuffle and it plays more than 12 hrs, practically !! The last recorded playback time by us was 13 hrs 18 mins. I say that's damn friggin good time. My 3G iPod plays for 6-7 hrs, and she's got one point up to tease me.

I dont know why you hate ITunes. Its one of the best designed GUI you can see. People think IPod is popular because of the hardware - they are totally wrong. The Nomad Zen Xtra definitely does not support driver-less copying of files, i.e. you will have to install the driver and a program to begin transferring data or music files. That said, it's a much better player than the ipod, since you get more space for a lesser price, and a replacable battery! ipods are good compact players (except the shuffle which sucks balls) which are basically great as long as you don't mind spending that much more money, are willing to risk your battery dying and then consequently giving Apple $100 to replace essentially a $30 battery. So with some of the money you save on the Zen, buy yourself a nice flash drive, and you can easily carry the installations programs around with you on your keychain.

While I don't own one, I recommend giving the iAudio M3 40GB (or 20, if you prefer) a look. I own the iAudio U2, and the sound quality on it is godlike (better than the ipod, plus a 5 band-eq and a nice array of sound enhancements). I imagine the M3 would be no different. Also, you'll get an FM reciever, line-in mp3 encoding, voice recording, and all for cheaper (with Apple, you pay extra for its design, and the M3 is smaller than the iPod and looks damn good). Oh, and no iTunes, it's all flash drive as it should be.

Considering that my original critique was about it being agonizingly simple (and featureless), thank you for proving my point. Their design crew did do an amazing job... it takes talent to create a player that lacks the most basic features (like a screen!), but can be priced more than competitive products, and be marketed to people as "a tuneful fashion statement." Steve Jobs and his flunkies are probably shuffling their pretty feet to their banks so that they can count the millions they have made off of people who have bought into mindless brand loyalty.
