Altec Lansing VS4121

Altec Lansing VS4121

Everything that has a beginning has an end. Not just a line from Matrix Revolutions...

Good performance, Great highs and bass, Cool looks, Headphone jack

Slightly expensive, Certain frequencies sound muffled

Everything that has a beginning has an end. Not just a line from Matrix Revolutions but a fact of life. Luckily in the field of technology, more often than not, a good product is replaced by something better. The Altec Lansing ATP3 has ruled the market along with the hearts of music enthusiasts the world over for quite some time now and is still going strong. But we have received hints that it will be phased out in not too distant a future. And today we have for review, a potential successor for the same, the VS4121. Whether it is worthy of the crown, let's find out.

Package and Specifications
For those who have heard the ATP3, I can sum up this review in a single sentence. The Altec Lansing VS4121 is nothing but the ATP3 with a minor cosmetic change, a bit of more power and a couple more features thrown in. However this model certainly deserves a lot more than just one sentence. Let us start from the looks. The satellites borrow their looks and design from the ATP3 though not completely. This time Altec Lansing has opted for a dual-shade styling with a neat mix of black and metallic grey. This design is as classy as that of its predecessor. Though some might find the original looks better, no one would really complain about the new one. Just like the ATP3, these satellites have the tri-driver design with two 28 mm front tweeters delivering the highs and an inverted 3" driver taking care of the midrange frequencies. The right satellite has knobs for adjusting the master volume and the bass and treble. A power button and a headphone jack, absent in the original have been added here. As far as the subwoofer goes, it looks nothing like the one found in ATP3. This is a front firing sub fitted with a 6.5" long throw driver.

The VS4121 flaunts a total power rating of 31 Watts RMS with 6 Watts assigned for each satellite and 19 Watts for the subwoofer. Now, on paper, the total power is just 1 Watt more than the ATP3 but in reality, these sound noticeably more powerful. The total power measure in terms of Sound Pressure Level stands at 97 dB. This system supports an overall frequency response of 25 Hz to 15 KHz.

Performance
We connected these speakers to our Audigy 2 Platinum and played our usual selection of test tracks, movie clips and games to give these babies a serious workout. Going by my past experience, I expected them to do well and they did not disappoint. I own an ATP3 myself and know them inside out. The sound quality here was very much like the ATP3 but these certainly sound a lot louder at peak volume. The 2 tweeters deliver crisp and clear highs and the subwoofer does a great job with the bass. As far as the midrange frequency reproduction goes, it is certainly better than most of the speaker systems in its price range but it does tend to struggle slightly when reproducing a certain range of frequencies towards the lower end of the midrange spectrum. At times they sound muffled. May be a slightly bigger driver could have fixed this minor glitch. The performance in movies and games was kick-ass.

Other than the one mentioned above, there isn't anything to complain about as far as the design or the performance goes. However I would have really loved to see a remote controller with this system. A basic wired remote control with just the power button and volume control would have been a great addition.

Conclusion
The Altec Lansing VS4121 is available for a street price of Rs. 4,500. The price though slightly on the higher side is very similar to that of the ATP3, a year and a half back. As it stands right now, the price difference between the ATP3 and the VS4121 is just over a thousand Rupees and that makes the ATP3 a slightly better buy. However the prices would eventually fall and the ATP3 will be replaced by these. And I am sure these will keep the ATP3 legacy alive.

When I first got these I noticed a slight hum like a heartbeat when there was nothing playing. Now a year later, I just tried to play some music then also tried video, both got a screech from the speaker. The more you turn the volume knob the louder it is. I will not be buyung this brand again.

Well, this is a stunning 2.1 speaker system, its a must buy for anyone looking for a 2.1 system for under 4k. Comparing to ATP3 to VS4121 - Woofer- atp3's sub dosnt hv a firing port, due to which thr is inacuracy in bass, atps's bass is somewhat blunt at any vol level coz the beat dosnt hv a time span short enough to result in a KICK. But in vs4121, the bass is kicky at any vol level. atp's sub tends to boom at higher vol level and looses thump. But vs4121 remains kicky. The base of atp satelites faces completly downwards due to which the sound completly disperses in all directions, this results in not very good sound for the person sitting rite in frnt of them. In vs4121 the base is slightly tilted towards frnt which causes sound waves to bounce frm the desk towads the person in frnt and also some dispersion towards sides to fill up the room. Result is more clear and prominent sound for the person in frnt of spkrs. vs4121 satellites sound more louder due to the tilt in base. as far as the peak vol level is concerned i hv never been able to push them above half, coz they become too loud for me. So there you see, the difference.

Hi! I've owned a pair of ATP3 for nearly a year now and the verdict is clearly "I love them". I use them purely for music from my PC (no games, no movies). On some sound tracks with deep guitar bass, the speakers tend of produce a larger than required bass tone leading to drowning of other sounds. Its like a loud "HHMMMM". It is definitely not hiss or humm. It is just reproduction of the original albeit louder. My question, how can I improve this situation? Bass and treble setting help but then I lose out on most of the desirable bass in other sections. Also, can someone throw insights on best possible placements/usage of such speakers. The usual knowledge I have (keep speakers at ear level, bass unit in corner) so I am looking for some deep inights. Like, should I place the bass and satellites on some special kind of wood to get better sound reproduction? Thanks, Gurdas

Why do they say that for music buffs (no game no movies) a 2.1 Speaker system is more than enough. Could you enlighten me?

I recently bought a set of ATP3 and am completely satisfied. For Rs. 3150 they are more than value for money. While they justify a price of rs. 4000 or even 4500, i wouldn't pay, 4500 for slightly modified atp3s when i can buy them for 1350 less. Looks wise I like the atp3 better than VS4121. the only real benefit seems to be the headphone jack which i miss in atp3s but that wouldn't make me shell out so much more.
