Altec Lansing MX-5021 Speaker System

Altec Lansing MX-5021 Speaker System

Ameya Dalvi, Jan 14, 2004 0000 hrs IST

These have to be the best 2.1 channel PC speakers that I have ever come across in our country.

Excellent sound reproduction, Loud and powerful, Remote controls, Good build quality, Headphone jack and Auxiliary input

Slightly expensive for a 2.1 channel speaker system

With THX being the buzzword for all high-end speaker systems for a while now, we were surprised to find one missing in the Altec Lansing line up. As we all know, Altec Lansing is a major player in the Multimedia speakers arena and have been amongst the first few along with Creative to unleash a large variety of speakers here ranging from the basic two point stereo to the high-end 5.1 channel variants. That's what made the absence more conspicuous. Finally the wait is over and we have with us the THX certified 2.1 channel speakers from Altec Lansing, the MX-5021. Whether they were worth the wait, let's find out.

The speakers arrived packed in a good-looking box, which appeared a bit too big for a 2.1 channel speaker system. In fact, it was bigger than those of some of the 5.1 channel systems that we have tested in the past. I couldn't wait any longer and unpacked the contents and stumbled upon a lot of goodies. For starters, there was this massive subwoofer standing tall at around a foot and a half and add to that a depth of over a foot. It was fitted with a 6.5" long throw driver and also hosted the power supply components. Then there was a pair of 10.5" satellites each fitted with two 3" drivers to take care of the mid-range frequencies and a 1" horn-loaded tweeter for delivering the highs. Other than that the package also contained a pair of remote controls, one wired and the other cordless. Both the remotes had adjustments for the master volume, bass and treble along with a power button. The wired remote was fitted with blue LEDs and a knob for adjusting the sound and sported a headphone jack and an auxiliary input for connecting another audio device. All the necessary cables were included in the package.

As I mentioned before, the MX-5021 are THX certified and boast of a total power output of 90 Watts RMS of which 20 Watts is allocated for each of the satellites and 50 Watts for the subwoofer. Loudness of the system stands at 103 dB. The system supports an overall frequency response of 30 Hz to 22 KHz. That's it for the technical stuff, now let's get down to the real thing. I connected them to our Audigy 2 and then the time I spent in front of these babies was nothing short of sheer bliss.

We stretched them to the limit with our set of audio benchmarks, which include sound tracks from different genre, games, movie clips etc., and they came out with flying colours in every single test that we threw at them. The reproduction of high, mid and low frequencies was absolutely spot-on. The highs were crisp and the mids were deep and rich. The bass too was powerful and tight with a lot of thump. As for the loudness, it's simply deafening but the sound didn't crack even at peak volume. To be precise, everything sounded just about perfect. Music is always the most difficult test to get through. If you can manage that well, excelling in gaming sound and movies is just another test to pass and it did just that. It can easily get you jumping out of your seat when reproducing the blasts in certain action games and get your adrenaline pumping in NFS Underground. The classic lobby scene from Matrix sounded better only in the theatres perhaps. All in all, these have to be the best 2.1 channel PC speakers that I have ever come across in our country.

The reviews of such fairytale products often have a tragic end, thanks mainly to their price. Luckily it's not the case with this model. The MX-5021 will be officially available here by the end of this month for a street price of Rs. 12,000. Though the price is slightly on the higher side for a 2.1 channel system, you easily get your money's worth, courtesy of its features and fabulous sound quality. Even though it marginally misses out on a perfect 5 star rating, I would like to add that this is the closest, any 2.1 channel speaker system has ever come to getting it.

One gripe I have is that I was allowed to feast on these speakers for only a week when I would have preferred to have them for a few months at least (just kidding). But the truth is that no matter for how long you listen to them, you just don't seem to get enough of it. For the little time that they were here, they truly rocked my world and if you buy them I am sure they will rock yours too.

Definitions of THX on the Web: * Certification program for home theater equipment. Uses some proprietary features, but mostly assures a base quality level for a given room size. (See THX Select or Ultra.) Is compatible with any and all soundtrack formats. Stands for either Tom Holman's eXperiment, after the engineer who drafted the original standard, or is named after the company's founder George Lucas' first movie, THX 1138. Nobody agrees on which.

5021 is the ideal companion if u are a hardcore music buff like me. Every sound about this model is more than perfect. The important thing is it has excellent punch in its bass and crispness in its whispers. A very satisfying product.

MX5021 - Awesome System, Awesome Performance, Awesome Features This system is a treat to the ears. The only disadvantage I can see is the price. But it makes sense investing in a good speaker system since their life is about 4-5 years only next to your Monitor. Another comparable model is Altec Lansing 621, available in Bombay for a street price of 6500 Rs while MX5021 costs almost 3000 more. For someone on budget these are the only affordable systems in the market. The reason why one should go for a 2.1 system is that music is available only in stereo, MP3s, CD Audio contain data only for 2 channels. The only place where you need a 4.1 system is games and some new DVD movies which have 4 channel sound. Choosing from among 621 and MX5021 is tough. 621 is a great system and being an old model , its cheap but it lacks features. Still 621 is a good buy if you are more into music and are a bass lover. It does not have a Bass/Treble control or a Headphone Jack. Pros: Great for music Classic Looks Raw Power - 143 Watts Total Continuous RMS!!! (53W Sub + 2 x 45W Satellite) Great build quality Not very expensive Cons: Lacks features like Bass/Treble control (Software Controls are useless. You will end up spoiling the quality) and Headphone Jack Its too loud if u have a small room. (You can have upto 50 watts per channel for any room upto 200 sq. feet) Clarity not as good as MX5021. This matters in movies. MX5021 being a THX Certified system, guarantees great performance. Being a new model its expensive and you are paying some royalty for the THX Certification. But still its definetly worth it. With these you can really tell the difference betwwen good quality CDs and downloaded MP3s. Pros: Great overall performance..Awesome voice clarity. Great for movies. Very Stylish Looks Decently powered - 90 Total Continuous watts RMS (50W Sub + 2 x 20W Satellite) Control pod has Bass/Treble control, Headphone Jack and Auxilary input. Also has LEDs indicating Volume and Bass/Treble levels. Comes with a small IR remote with ON/OFF , Volume and Bass/Treble control. Cons: Expensive. Almost 3000 Rs more than 621 Not as loud as 621. This would matter if you have a large room. The sub could have been a little more attractive. Satellites are prone to tipping over. Bass can become boom in case of poorly encoded MP3s if set too High. (CD Audio sounds amazing!!!) In all both are great systems. 621 has got more punch and MX5021 is more crisp. It all comes down to what you are gonna use them for. I would say if you don't have a very large room and are ready to shell out the extra 3000 bucks ( and they are worth spending given the extra features), go for MX5021. Yet there is no regret in going for 621. See the demo for both the systems. Carry some audio CDs (not MP3s) you have listened to earlier and sample them out on both the systems. I personally have been using MX5021 for the past few days and my observation with them is that poor quality mp3 ( anything encoded at less than 160kbps), doesn't give very good bass output) There is one more feature I would like to mention. When you connect a headphone to the Headphone Jack in MX5021, its not same as connecting it directly to the Line Out of the sound card. I use Philips SBC HP150 Stereo Headphones. You get great sound in the headphones too!! PS: Whichever speakers you buy, You will need to do some tweaking with the settings to suit your needs. Great products by Altec Lansing!!

I bought this speaker system for 7800 (inclusive of VAT @ 4%) in Pune. Awesome sound but I was disappointed with the wireless remote. You have to point the remote towards the wired remote and the range isn't all that great. I went to buy VS3151 (5.1 system) but the product is discontinued just 15 days back. Anywayz, I'm glad I bought this coz I don't really run applications that would utilize a 5.1 channel.

Do you still have the ATP3 speakers? Or does anybody have them?

by Joseph, Mumbai, on Sep 08, 2004 12:38 PM, Report abuse

Yeah, I had the ATP3 -- I just went out and bought the MX5021. I've been listening to them for a few days now, and I've got to say I am rather displeased. The midranges are FAR too bright and over-emphasized. Even adjusting an equlizer to lower the mids--it hardly alleviates the problem. If I turn the volume over two notches, especially on hard-rock peices, the acoustics and even vocals become apparently exaggerated--almost with a screaching nature. Now, this can be due to the fact that I am in a relatively small room (bedroom), or it could be my sound card maybe, or perhaps the distance between the sats and my listening position--(though it is roughly about 1 metre from each sat). Anyone else have this problem? Im really considering returning them.

Hi, i saw this product at an apple dealer in bangalore and was impressed. agree with your views.. i checked out the bose store next door where they had an IPOD cradle - and trust me, the altec lansing sounded much better than the bose... at half the price.. would the 5021 be ideal for use in a semi open area (2nd floor, terrace?) thanks for your time...

Hi, I am kind of an audio-phile and was using Denon Stereo Amp and Technics Speakers (But they were pretty old) and like most of us I had a very serious budget constraints. I know, if I could spend some 60000/- I would be able to get a ncie receiver+speakers but I have that budget for a laptop+Speakers !!! So, was on the search for speakers which are true value for money with respect to performance. No offense meant, I owned a Sony Micro system, and boy ear fatigue (U r ability to listen to a particular sound level over a sustained duration) was so high.. that I got rid of that as well. My reasearch went on for quite a long time and was about to narrow down on Norge speakers but suddenly I came across this pair of speakers. I started reading the reviews and was totally totally impressed. I was in UK that time so checked out the system and was impressed. But I couldnt buy it cos of wieght limits. After coming back to India, I got to read about Logitech Z-680 or the latest Z-5500 (the latest version of Z-680) which was mind blowing!. I got to know that Z-680 was selling at 24000/- which might sound expenive but given the stuff it packs in, it is really worth it. So was unable to decide and then finally made up my mind for MX5021, cos 1) it is stereo and so not much of set is required (I am on constant move!), 2) I have got them for 9500/- and os I can upgarde to my favorite home theatre with out feeling a lot of pinch 3) Sound is very very impressive. I cant really compare it with the Home Theatres that I auditioned in the 70000/- price range but it lives up to its THX certification. I use it to listen to CDs and watch DVDs. Though the surround is missing but it is truely amazing experience. Tips about installation: Place the satellites at the ear level (toe them in a little bit) and the subwoofer close to a wall (not too close, let the sub breathe) and if possible carpet the room. Keep changing the Bass/Treble control for every DVD or CD cos each one has its own characterstics. Dont hesitate to do this cos it is v important. Use a good power supply. PS: 1) I dont think I would like to consider a upgrade in next 2-3 years 2) Dont compare satellites with towers. If U have money to buy the towers U like then go for them Happy shopping and listening.. Cheers, SATS
