What do you hate about a 5.1 channel speaker system?
Feature rich, good wide stereo effect, tight bass, RCA and aux inputs
Surround effect not all that good, average highs, expensive
I connected these to our Audigy 2 Platinum and tuned and positioned them for optimum output quality. Then I ran our usual audio benchmarks comprising of sound tracks from different genre, movie clips with AC3 sound and games. Let's start off with music. Other than being a pseudo 5.1 channel system, the GT-5051R is also a full fledged 2.1 channel system. So it wouldn't be wrong on our part to compare this to other 2.1 channel systems in its price range. The sound quality in music was pretty decent. The bass was tight and just about adequate at peak level with a reasonable amount of thump. The midrange response was pretty good too. But surprisingly the highs weren't all that sharp. This is very unlike Altec Lansing. In terms of loudness there was absolutely nothing to complain about.
In gaming and movies, the performance was what you would expect from a good 2.1 channel system but in terms of surround sound, it certainly cannot be compared to a true 5.1 channel system. In Doom 3, you can't exactly make out the difference between being attacked from the sides and behind. Yes, it certainly offers a wider stereo effect than other 2.1 channel systems but not something that you can term as a true surround effect. And that according to me is not worth the premium you pay for these speakers.
The Altec Lansing GT-5051R are available for a street price of Rs. 9,400 with a one year warranty. That price isn't outrageous but it isn't one that spells good value for money either. For a few hundred Rupees less, you can get the MX-5021 model from the same company which is easily one of the best 2.1 channel system that you can buy in this country. That further depletes its value. To conclude, I would say that the Altec Lansing GT-5051R is an above average speaker system with a good wide stereo effect but fails to impress as a surround sound system. So those seeking pure surround sound with still have to live with the wire mess. As a 2.1 channel system, I would definitely not recommend it over the MX-5021 for that price. Thus it tries to get its feet into two different boats but unfortunately ends up splashing in between.

Many folks here think Bose is good. In case you havn't heard he saying - "No Highs, no Lows - Must be a Bose". I'm not saying Bose is the biggest crap out there, but it surely is the biggest Media Hyped Crap. Audiofeil, Symphony, Odyssey, Red Rock, AAD, Gallo Acoustics, Druid, Almarro, Paradigm.. are just a few name that are MUCH better than this hyped Bose... hell, I souldn't ven be comparing these hing end systems to the shitty Bose.. just wrote this 'coz many think Bose the final word in audio when its not even worth the begining :-).. no offense.

Those who make themselves look better only by hurling accusations and abuse at others are no less shitty.You should be confident of your product and that's what counts at the end.Not everyone is lucky,especially with speaker systems,you may or may not get the optimum value for your money with any given brand for that matter just because no two speakers could be manufactured same.Technical imperfections cannot be emulated and they do make a difference in the performance of the final product.Only a connoisseur will know the difference which unfortunately most aren't.That's why the "shitty" posting of yours?

Bose uses the same technique : direct/reflective speakers. But it has a DSP loaded control module and automatic calibration and of course, the R&D of Bose :P

I was actually looking forward to buy this one really..... but now I think I'll rather persue my dad to give me his Bose system.. :D At least that won't cost me 9 grand and give less value.

Damn...so much for feeling better that you get somewhat similar sound from 3.1??? And if you have a 5.1 speaker set it will have cables ..so..why worry?? The main problem I think is lower power(RMS) and sometime "Booming" woofer. I think saving up and going for Creative 7.1 set once for all makes sense as you can enjoy all type of games and movies with it fully. But then again not every one is in that position so it becomes personal choice.
