Altec Lansing ATP3

Altec Lansing ATP3

Ameya Dalvi, Apr 14, 2003 0000 hrs IST

Great looks and excellent performance, this 2.1 speaker system is a definite yes even with its high price.

Excellent Bass and high-end response, Innovative design, Great looks

A little expensive, Low-mid response could have been better

A couple of weeks back we reviewed the AVS 500, the budget 4.1 speaker system from Altec Lansing. Last week, we managed to get our hands on the ATP3 model, one of their semi-premium 2.1 speakers. As soon as I got the speakers out of the box, they were an object of desire for quite a few of my colleagues even before I plugged them into the sound card, courtesy of their sleek and sexy anatomy. Some of the guys around had a 'What on earth are these things' look on their face and were convinced that these were speakers only when I plugged them in our Audigy and gave them a demo.

These semi-premium range speakers from Altec Lansing come with an MRP of Rs. 5500/-, a whole 2000 rupees more than the AVS 500 and around Rs. 3000 more than other 2.1 speakers available. Some may say that the looks alone are worth the price, but let's not forget that speakers are meant to sound good and not look good, though it doesn't hurt if they look good too. We'll soon find out whether the ATP3's performance can compliment its looks and justify the premium.

The package comprised of a pair of smartly designed satellites and a subwoofer. Each satellite has of a pair of 28 mm front firing tweeters and a 3" inverted mid-range facing the ground. The subwoofer has an inverted 6.5" driver and a built-in power supply. The Power/Volume control and the Bass and Treble knobs are present on the right satellite. The satellites have a RMS rating of 6 Watts each, while the subwoofer has a power of 18 Watts RMS. The system supports an overall frequency response of 45 Hz to 18 KHz. The wires provided are long enough, color-coded and totally idiot-proof.

I just couldn't wait any longer and plugged them in our Audigy and took them for a spin. It produced a near perfect output with our test tracks and pleased one and all. The highs were perfect and mids were pretty good too. But the lower mid range response, though very decent, wasn't the best I have heard and could have been better. The Artis Avalon B-73 has a better low-mid range response. The subwoofer is one of the best I have come across in the 2.1 system range. The bass it pumped out was an absolute treat. It was tight yet thumping. There was virtually no jarring even at peak volume.

In Quake3, the sound quality again was top class. Though serious gamers would miss the rear channels, they certainly won't complain about the sound quality. Every single click, bang and boom was reproduced to perfection. The sound reproduction was so detailed and realistic that the Quake3 starting video had one of my colleagues jumping out of his pants. The quality of bass in these speakers is truly special.

With a street price of under Rs.4500/-, some might argue that it would be a better option to opt for a good 5.1 channel speaker system like the Mercury HT-4500 selling for that price. Though the argument has a lot of weight, it's not totally correct. If you are interested in gaming with multi-channel sound or watching DVDs with surround sound, the above argument holds good. The HT-4500 would serve you better than these speakers. If listening to music with high quality sound and bass is your priority, you will love these speakers. So get your priorities right before you make a buying decision.

To conclude, these speakers appeal to your ears as much as they do to your eyes. The ATP3 are a bit pricey and will burn a small hole in your pocket, but you will barely notice it once you plug these in and blast them and especially when you see your neighbours and friends drooling over it. These beauties are certainly neighbour's envy and owner's pride.

Hi all, Got my ATP3s for 3300 Rs from Logtech, Trivandrum. Believe me, these speakers dont look much but they can definitely cause structural damage to your house if you are not careful with the controls ;). I had to decide between creative inspire 2400(rs 2200) and atp3. After listening to both i knew there was no contest at all.... the atp3 sounded definitely worth the extra 1000 bucks...and they look cool too!!. Also i dont have a soundcard, just the onboard, so i dont know if i will be able to get the max out of these beauties. thanks techtree for your inputs. i will update on the problems (if any) that i come across .Cheers

I just bought a set of Altec Lansing VS.3121 speakers for my PC running Media Player 11. How should I set these speakers up for optimum preformance? wow!!!!! holy shit.....got my piece today evening (Rs 3150, Kolkata)and havent switched off the thing till now. decided that i've got to post right away..i was wondering why everyone went on harping about the looks of these things when looking at the pics i found them downright ugly. only when these things came out of the box did i realize that the babes were beautiful too...my friends kept on examining the satellites wondering how such a sleek tiny thing could pack in so much stuff..i had read the reviews so knew pretty much what to expect with regard to the sound. simply put...these things rock in every sense..the set makes creative 5.1 look way too inferior (did a test at the store). in fact two other guys who were there at the store kept on insisting on creative coz they havent heard of altec....persuaded them to listen to altec once. they never turned back. i dont think the guys at creative would appreciate..now to the points....the bass is not the loudest i've heard. but it still has enough oomph and more to please even the hardcore bass freak (i'm one)..but i can tell u that this one simply packs the TIGHTEST punch of them all. instead of the usual muddle of low frequencies which are often mistakenly referred to as the thump, this one provides u with the pleasure of identifying each and every note played on the bass (listen to eric johnson-camels night out)...lack of mid range response is something which irritates the hell out of me every time i listen to pc speakers (well...most of them). it is as if these manufactures think that they can put together a woofer which is loud (dont mention the noise) and something which screeches out the highs and call it clarity. notice the superior response of the atp3s by listening to some warm strings (try desert rose or anything by craig armstrong). but i think the low mids could have been improved a bit more. treble is decent enough though i feel that the satellites are a wee bit underpowered compared to the monster of a woofer. u cannot crank up the bass more than 50% at high volume as the whole thing feels a bit unbalanced. but mind u....theres absolutely no sign of distortion or jarring (unlike many of the creatives i've come across). gaming is decent though the surround would be missed. the BFG in Q3 will get things below shaking. overall a good set of speakers. excellent if music is your priority. highly recommended...

Yes u can. I've done so with a cable converter / connector. Get a connector (Rs.15/- here) from the local electronics spares shop which has one audio mini stereo PLUG on one end (side A) and two RCA PLUGs on other end (side B). Connect the RCA jacks of the DVD player to side B of the connector and the audio-in(put) jack of ATP3 to side A of the connector. If u do these properly, u will b listening to audio whilst thanking me.

Hi Sam, I bought my ATP3 today for Rs. 3450 (in Baroda, Gujarat). And from what the distributor in Ahmedabad told me, I believe it is easy to get your price in Mumbai. The official Indian channel partner for Altec Lansing is Zeta Technologies. You can reach them at 022-24102288. Just ask for the person who handles Altec Lansing speakers and then pose your budgetary restriction. He/She will hopefully guide you to a dealer in Mumbai who can meet your requirement. As for the speaker quality, well they are good and probably worth the money. However, I will have a fuller idea in a day or two after I have run them through the paces. Goodluck! - Gurdas

Sam, If you insist I am sure they can sell the unit for Rs. 3200/-. Or maybe just goto one of their dealers and put your budgetary limitation on the table. My ATP3 set is doing great. Worth the money I spent on them. But beware some of the reviews which make them sound like the best on Earth. They are NOT. I have tried recent hindi film songs, punjabi beats, classical ragas, tabla instrumentals and the speakers did great on all. I am still to test English beats, Jazz, instruments like flute and santoor. The speakers do not crackle at even full volume. No input, full volume hiss is hardly audible. Mids are solid because of the 3" speakers. The bass unit (and rarely ever drowns the rest of the score by "booming"). If you can edit settings in your player then you are most likely to get satisfactory performance. One must realise all songs cannot be pleasureable at one setting. If you want me to sum up in one word my purchase feedback it would be "happy". Hope that helps. - Gurdas

Guess who just joined the ATP3 fan club!!! These speakers simply rock! Well initially i was looking somthing for more than the 60W PMPO speakers that i was looking for. Although budget was not a problem i didnt want to blow too much on speakers. After reading a lot of reviews i finally decided on the ATP3. I have bought creative 4.1 and 5.1 speakers for my friends and family and didnt really recommened altec lansing or any other. But now i can say for 3200Rs these babies are worth every rupee! True you can get the 4.1 creative for a lil bit more but then these really rock! Like someone said earlier "Makes creative sound like mercury speakers" . I first tried them with my 5.1 onboard sound card. Was great.. but then i had a spare creative live sound card. NOW IT REALLY ROCKS EVEN MORREEEEEE ... The base is amazing ... enough to blast my room. Now that im satisfied with woofer systems im saving up for somthing more powerful for a HT setup in my hall.... Will send some reviews on that too ... after the bucks are spent .... Cheerrrss .. ATP3 .Worth your money!

Just got these babies for 3200/- Bucks!!! Man oh Man... Highs are Damn Crisp, Lows are Tight and punchy...overall very happy, Have a good consideration before buying these though... Creative Inspire 4400 (4.1 channel) is available for 2950 Bucks... But Quality of audio in this makes Creative look like mercury normal speakers!! LOL, We tested out ATP3 and Inspire 4400 before zeroing in on these babies.. Things against these speakers -High Cost , Other 'Premium' speakers like creatives are substantially cheaper (their 4.1 ch speakers are on 2950!!). Also apparently not many in chennai are aware on altec lansing!! to them creatives are the BOSS lol poor mortals dont know that these are much superior than even Creative megaworks 2.1 Digital(Source 3dsoundsurge.com). -The woofer, Well its good, but Placement is critical... That is it HAS to be placed at the corner of a room if u want to have good bass response...Creative produce the thump even without any corner placement (But the knockout punch of this is much better... Its murderous if turn up Bass and switch on SRS WOW FX in Windows Media Player 9, Creative Distort their woofer even at Half Volume level even though we fed it with FLAT signal...(My Creative MuVo 128MB)... -Woofer is not ported... Intrestingly Wooofers are to ported... Funny because Ported woofers are considered to be more efficient, though I think ported woofers have a tendency to boom quite a lot.. I give 5/5 stars for these speakers... (Tip: Look at the size of the woofer,Creatives look puny while These look Intimidating..Dont mess with me types!) Also I Must thank techtree guys, Though these US reviews seems to be more professional, we have no idea of cost and availablity... My entire descision was based on TechTree review... Great work guys, keep up the good work

Hi friends, I am an another ALTEC ATP3 Fan joining this Altec club. Got my ATP3 speakers today for 3300 from Computer Selection - Lamington road, mumbai. Believe me guys when i say i have done helluva research on all kinds of speakers ranging from Rs. 2000 to Rs. 8000 ..... Right from the mercury ones, altecs, creative to the JBL speakers. With a budget of 4-5000 bucks, i drilled down the list to altecs and creative based on output and sound quality. I had spent around 2 weeks surfing the net for all kinds of reviews for altecs and creative sets. I had the altec 2100, 5100, 251, 621 and atp3 in mind, where as in creative i checked out 4.1 and 5.1 speakers. Guys if u want to go in for pure music, altec 621 / 641's are the best speakers... no other set can beat them when it comes to crispness, clear treble and thumping, tight bass. I had almost bought them at a price of 6500, However i found several reviews on the net from users whose 621's had died / stopped functioning due to over heating of the amps in the subwoofers. Hence with a heavy heart i decided against this speaker as it has some build fault. Altecs 2100 , 5100 & 251's are more suited to gamers and for watching movies. Hence i put them out of my list. Finally i had atp3 in my list, as atp4 and apt5 are not available in india. Whereas in creative i had 4.1 in mind because it didnt have much of a difference as compared to 5.1 which just boasts of an additional satellite of 6 watts - thats it, but with a price difference of almost Rs. 2200 between the two. So i went to my dealer, asked him for a demo of both altec atp3 and creative 4.1 I couldnt believe the difference that i noticed. ATP3 was 10 times more crisp, had a much more tight and powerful bass and clear treble than creative 4.1 . As some one rightly said in this thread, the aTP3 made creative 4.1 sound like a mercury speaker in comparision. The only edge that creative 4.1 had was that it is more powerful n is much more loud than atp3 but with a compromising sound quality. Hence i bought the atp3 babies and coupled them with a vibra 128 creative card. Its a killer combo, can be even better if you use a SB LIVE ! Right now am rocking my house with these cute but powerfull atp3s ! its complete value for money and if you have a budget of 3-4 thousand bucks, then blindly go for these sets. I give them complete endorsement and a 5/5 rating !!!!

Hi, after this review, I am a big fan of these speakers!! But friends strange part is that I want to install these speakers in my cars. I believe these speakers with built-in amp. is way cheaper yet compact to be used for car-audio. Only hurdle will be to get the proper Power Input supply from car battery. Can some one guide me on my decision on fitting these speakers (or any better ones in the same price range or even cheaper) for my car? Also I would like to have the Specs for Power Input Reqmt. for these speakers and compatibility and durability in moving environment, like a car on Delhi's Roads :) Tx in advance for all suggestions...
