Alone in the Dark Xbox 360

Alone in the dark has been made with a lot thought on its gameplay.

Innovative use of fire, great presentation, interesting puzzles, good visuals and sound

Irritating controls, graphical glitches

There are some strange activities going on in the city and somehow the occurrences lead to the 800-acre Central Park. This idea of linking the story to an iconic real-life landmark does add a sense of attachment to players, who have visited central park. Imagine playing a game in which the Gateway of India is a portal to the underworld, and you have to snipe zombies from atop the Taj. Bad example but paints a clearer picture doesn't it? People are getting killed around our protagonist and all he can do is watch helplessly. There are these "fleshy spawns" that mysteriously appear on solid concrete walls and sucks people inside. You are once caught in one of these traps but escape using fire.

Fire is your main weapon in the game and comes handy almost throughout the game. So the first level is escaping the building you are stuck in. The level is well designed with some amazing puzzle sequences; these are presented with multiple camera angles and Hollywood-ish scripted events.

As I mentioned earlier, the controls are the main culprit, you can pick almost anything and use it as a weapon, but controlling them is a different issue altogether. You have to ready a weapon and strike using the right analog stick. The entire process is as interesting as most recent Hindi films. The system is flawed and makes combat very boring. The really cool aspect of the game is the use of fire; burning enemies was never this cool.

The player can use chairs and other solid objects, put them on fire and use it to inflict major damage to enemies. You will encounter zombies in the game and the only way to finish off a zombie is to fling him/her into the fire. This is where the innovative use of fire comes into play, finding new ways to put the zombies on fire is quite exciting.

The inventory system is really smart and quite unique. You can pick various items and store them in your jacket, so whenever you want to use any weapon, you look at your options nicely tucked away in your jacket. Another unique process is healing your wounds. You have to scavenge for healing sprays and use them to individually heal every wound, what's stupid is that your clothes regenerate themselves as you heal yourself. The concept of storing limited number of items in your jacket adds some realism to the game, as well as makes it challenging as you can't carry 10 guns in one jacket. All in all the combat is good fun if you like smashing zombies with stuff you pick up. The game can be scary but not too scary. The sudden appearances of those fissures from the ground can make you jump but it wears off very easily.

I agree with the review, but I think a 4/5 is more deserving.
