In April this year, I'd reviewed a Value for Money (VfM) laptop -- the Compaq Presario V3228au. It had all the perks and got the Techtree vote for best VFM laptop. This time, we ve a new competitor -- the Aspire 4520. Let's see if it can grab the VFM crown.
Sudharshan, I too face exactly the same issue with my Aspire 4520. Can you share the solution that u used to overcome this ? Thanks

Problem with your board. I just got my laptop fixed, mine not actually had problem with dvd player only but fatal damage on board..after they changed to a new motherboard the problem solved

I have aspire 4520 for more than a year now. No repairs. works fine with xp. use paragon backup for backups. wants to use linx. could not connect to internet with ubuntu linux.

Acer computers services and also the products sucks.....with in one year after I brought my laptop....they replaced my LCD screen,Battery,Motherboard,Processor...it's almost everything(luckily was in warranty) except the plastic body..i've the bill with me to prove that....

Have you checked for earthibg problems at your home or wherver you have charged the notebook? I have a state of the art IBM desktop that kept failing due to un-regulated current. My home had poor earthing. As a result, my computer was subjected to spikes of power that rendered the LCD, RAM and eventually the IC on the motherboards useless. Cost me a bomb to rectify each.

come on dude,i just bought Acer aspire aspire 4520 with amd Turion X2 TL-60 2.0 GHz,it working just fine,which i hope so after lookin at your words?!What i hate about notebook is the battery.does any manufacturer design a notebook with alternative power supply such as solar or lunar?or mayb some nuke?if theres one,i would like to know how..:)

These all comparison according to me are absolutely wrong and unethical to compare with. Hehehehe They had given comparison with either with INTEL Quad core or with INTEL server processor (XEON) which is absolutely wrong. They had not even tried to compare it with the equivalent processors like INTEL core 2 Duo. This means the performance of the AMD Athlon processor is so excellent that it seems to me INTEL had to bribe to show it lower. I say shame on you all to show AMD down.

Finally someone who found out the 'technical' details of this review. I found it very funny to compare a budget processor to a high performance processor. We need proper comparisons. The best to compare this processor would be the Dual core. The core 2 duo is out of this league and priced at at least 10k more.

Acer India website shows Aspire 4520 as AMD Turion? 64 X2 Mobile Technology. The dealer versions show Aspire 4520 as Athlon 64. Can anybody clear the confusion between Athlon and Turion x2?

There are 2 different processors used in the same model, ie the TK53 and the TL58. The TL58 is better ofcourse but come bundled with Vista and is priced higher. TK 53 is the Atlon while TL 58 is the Turion. Turion is better in terms of battery performance and heats lesser. Performance wise both are similar

I went to get this laptop with 2gb ram few days back..Instead i settled for compaq v3611Au with 2gb..its priced at 29k..and acer with 2gb around 29.5k.. Acer++ = Bluetooth+160gbhdd+webam+default 1gb ram Compaq ++ = Nforce 630m+7150m supporting purevideo hd VS acer 610m+7000m.. amd x2 1.8ghz vs 1.7 opf acer better build quality Overall without the extra kinks compaq is a better performer while acer has some extra stuffs..So do give it a look before jumping on the 4520 bandwagon

Acer Aspire 4520 is a good laptop. But The official Acer site shows that the laptop has Turion processor which is good for mobility. Where the model describe here has athlon. Why is the difference ?

In Kolkota it is available at Ezones in Kakurgachi/homeland/emall or you may also visit the acer brand stores (acer malls) at elgin road or GCA. Its a great buy, good luck.

I'd mostly made up my mind to buy a similar acer model - the 4710z. This is no doubt, a timely review as it gives me another option. My only grouse with acer (so far) is that they're loading some unheard of Linux distro called Linpus (without X windows), so there's no way to check out the display quality (or drivers for WiFi etc.) in stores. Ridiculous (or microsoft-influenced?) policy, when u consider there r distros like Ubuntu which can easily give even Vista a good run for its money. What kind of support does acer have?

Yes! Thats exactly the Turion's main problem area. It is better to wait until Jan 'coz new AMD range of processors will be out that is believed to outperform the Intel counterparts.

I got this laptop with a slight variation in the specs since i didnt purchase in India, Tt had AMD Turion 64 X2 Mobile TL-60 2.0 Ghz and with Vista Premium. I would like to mention a few problems: 1. Its not able to run some of the external HDD's with 2.0 specs, rather the speed was 1.1. (I tried Maxtor which didnt work, but Segate was working) 2. The keyboard is good, but the keys are a bit sticky if we type fast, i think this same problem with other Acer laptops which came in similar design since I tried 4710 and 5710 also. 3. The memory card slot is not able to read microSD plugged into a SD adapter. 4. I am runnung UBUNTU, it had some minor problems, related to nVidia / Sound / WLan drivers, but was able to resolve using the Ubuntu forum. But definitely this laptop is a VFM, and for running VISTA 2GB RAM is a good option.

My acer aspire 4520 just gets switched off all of a sudden and when i restart it, it does not even boot. The light turns and immediately turns off.........wat would be this problem?
