I would say that this software is an optional install for windows XP users, because of the native support in Windows XP. The preloaded drivers not only install the device but also provide the basic monitoring functions needed to control the UPS. However, with the software installed there certainly are a lot more functions available to configure and to set the device usage accordingly.
