|
Blackouts are unfortunately a sad reality that still plagues a lot of important IT sectors in India. Combine something like that with constantly fluctuating voltage and you have a sure-fire recipe for disaster. Though having regular surge suppressors or circuit breakers are good enough to take care of excess voltage or handle spikes, they're still quit useless if there is a sudden loss of electricity. Be it big cities or small towns, having a UPS has become quite a necessity if you're a part of the IT segment.
A UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) basically contains a powerful battery that can keep your system running effectively for some time even if you encounter a total loss of power. The surge suppressor built inside ensures that you don't face any electrical irregularities during the process and you're hardware remains safe.
Design
The APC Back-UPS ES 500 has a pretty good design – decently sized and sleek with a smoke-grey finish. The unit has four standard power outlets, well enough for plugging in the CPU, Monitor, Printer and Scanner. It also supports lightning surge protection for the modem phone line and a network cable, which is soon becoming a necessity in most UPS'. Being from the 500VA series, it can handle a maximum battery load of 500V/300W.
The ES 500 has a standard Power button with a status indicator, to tell you when you're running on battery, or if there's an overload, etc. It uses a push-button circuit breaker instead of a traditional fuse for easy recovery from short circuits and overloads.
The Bundling
APC has given a pretty good bundle with the ES 500. Along with the standard USB and serial cable for PC/Mac connectivity, there's also a phone/modem cable and a plug adapter for foreign power plugs.
The bundled software, PowerChute Personal Edition v1.3 gives you a quick status check on your UPS, lets you know how much power you have remaining in your UPS battery and how long it will last. The APC Shutdown Manager Automatically brings up the save file dialog box (if you have anything running applications) and shuts down your machine when the UPS battery power comes down to 40%.
The Test
For our tests we wanted to use a machine with a standard configuration, hence we selected the following configuration:AMD Athlon XP 2600+

Keyboard + Mouse After running multiple tests, I can safely deduce that the APC Back-UPS ES 500 can easily keep a machine on for approximately 10 minutes – more than enough time for anyone to save their data and safely shut-down the machine.
Conclusion
At a price like Rs. 2995, the ES 500 proves to be well worth it. It performs well, has good bundling and it's got all the up-to-date features that you'd require from a UPS. Besides it even looks kind of cute sitting next to your PC. I highly recommend this for anyone facing constant voltage problems.

i was purchased apc back UPS 0650 VA

It was not working, where i wii apporch.
After the power cut, immediately the computer off.

When I went in for lenova, the computer supplier recommended and supplied APC. I've heard that this is the m,ost popular system here. I do not know about its technical superiority, but am disappointed with its performance. It cocnked off within a few days, but replacement took several days. Once again, in the next few months it had deverloped 'on/off' problem. Since then my problem started with APC. They did not keep a record of my address and the serial number of the replaced system. Only after prodding for over a week they could replace the system. No technical person is available to speak to or seek clarification, nor was any responmsible answer coming from them to all my calls.

Off-line UPS at Rs. 2995/- ? No way, it's not worth even Rs. 1000. Don't you recommend good and a line interactive UPS rather than Off-line UPS. will not work in Indian power conditions.
