AMD Phenom X4 9650

'TLB bug' fixed, Good performance in video encoding, Runs cool.
A bit pricey, Does not beat the E8400.
AMD has been struggling with their CPU line up from the beginning, with the initial Phenom processors suffering from the "TLB Erratum" bug that caused the processors to crash and give random errors when the CPU was stressed a lot.
Thankfully AMD admitted the problem early on and began working on a fix for it. Since then they've launched the supposedly "bug free" processors under a slightly different name by adding '50' after the first two numbers, so the new processor replacing the Phenom X4 9600 is the X4 9650 which is what we have today.
The core of the 9650 is clocked at 2.3GHz and comes with 512Kb x 4 L2 and 2MB L3 cache. The TDP still remains the same at 95W and uses the 65nm fabrication process. This processor is in the middle along with the other 95W CPU's where below we have the Phenom X4 9550 at 2.2GHz and the X4 9750 at 2.4GHz.
At 2.3GHz, this Phenom aims to take a stab at the Intel's E8400, which falls in the same price bracket. Now before you say that this is unfair since the E8400 is a dual core and the Phenom 9650 is a quad, you'd be surprised to find that Intel's dual cores actually give a really strong competition to the Phenom X4's.

Not exactly the best of reviews.. The review seems quite pointless considering that you dont have the competing Quadcore Intel processor viz. Q6600 in the comparison, its apples vs oranges here.

Oh even more. The phenom 8750 is clocked at 2.4, not 2.3 ghz. Seriously, it's called Google. Use it once in a while.

A little further reading shows that the phenom 9850 (at your price point of about 9k) trades blows with the Q6600, which costs the same amount of money. The only real drawback is the power consumption, which you have not mentioned at all. With the presence of the excellent 780G/ 790GX chipsets, the phenom is not at all hard to recommend. You're turning into Intel fanboys.

Wow... just wow. Do you people even know that fast dual cores far outperform slower quads simply because almost no software is written for quads? Even the Q6600 will get pasted by the E8400. You can get a 9850 for 9.3k. Where did you get a 9650 for 9.5k? What an ill informed and idiotic review.

this is price from a seller online seller in bangalore. AMD PHENOM 64 X4 9650 --- Rs. 8900/- Intel Core 2 Quad 2.4 GHz Q6600 -- Rs 12300/- Intel Core 2 Duo 3.16 Ghz E8500 -- Rs. 9300/- I guess it will be similiar anywhere in India. Common sense says 12300 is way more than 8900. Probably that is what is lacking in the reviewer. Otherwise, he is paid misinformer. Deserves sympathy.
