5 Best WebOSes

5 Best WebOSes

This time, we'll be looking at WebOSes, also called Webtops. These are operating systems that are purely accessible from a Web browser.

There's no denying the allure of a having a singular, anywhere-accessible base to get down and finish your daily activities, that too managed by experts.

Browser-based applications shoot at this goal; and now even more so because of the Web 2.0 movement.

This time, we'll be looking into the WebOSes, also called Webtops. These are operating systems that are purely accessible from a Web browser. Surprisingly, the term "Webtop" was coined as early as 1996 to characterize the migration of desktop applications to the browser. Here you have numerous advantages as well as concurrent disadvantages, such as zero installations and bug fixes. More on this can be found here discussed in much more detail.

In recent years, these advantages have fuelled a mass migration of code to the server side. Many of which thwarted by the limitations of HTML have led to an advancement of client-side technologies such as applets, Flash plug-ins, and more recently, AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML).

Before dabbling with any of the 5 contenders listed further on, it would be advisable to 'Turn off' all pop-up blockers when trying out the WebOSes as blockers tend to interfere during operation. As a further pre-caution, I would advise you to use separate windows (not just tabs) for launching these applications as crashes can and do occur in every operating system even if it is online, this will at least ensure that your other unsaved work in browsers is not affected.

Meet the 5

The 5 that are chosen here are the best that one can find online as of now, if in case you know of any that I've missed out which are worth a look, do drop us a line.

All WebOSes by default come with some sort of online Office apps, email program, contacts list, calendar, IM client, calculator, and games; while some come with an array of external application support, and mentionworthy YouOS.

Note that WebOSes aren't equal to Internet start-pages such as Netvibes or the Google personalized page. These are a whole new different breed.

Also, most of these support popular browsers like Internet Explorer and Firefox, but not all the browsers such as Opera or Safari or lesser known ones such as Flock.

still can't figure out what is the point of a webOS? can you use them offline with at least some of the apps like a word processor or spreadsheet? usually most people would work offline on such apps. there's another webOS called fanbox which seems to offer the same as all the others reviewed here.

In 1980's and 1990's I used to work Side Kick, a very good program for keeping track of your contacts, calendar, work schedule, etc., which was free at that time. Is it still available?
