5 Best WebOSes

5 Best WebOSes

Nikhil Rastogi, Dec 16, 2007 2124 hrs IST

This time, we'll be looking at WebOSes, also called Webtops. These are operating systems that are purely accessible from a Web browser.

Goowy

Funny name to keep for anything other than nasal mucus, Goowy is a flash based WebOS. It has a demo login for those who just want to try it out without signing in. The OS is quite responsive and has real nice clean interface in green (I think the developers were thinking mucus too!) with its own unique set of icons. On a serious note, the name comes from a play on the term GUI which is pronounced the same way.

Any OS worth its salt has its own standard applications feature set such as IM, mail, contacts manager, and calendar but surprisingly, Goowy has no Office-like applications. But what it does have is an incredible assortment of games. While I'm a fan of gaming, this is a rather strange focus for a Web-Operating system unless you aim at only a gaming crowd.

Goowy borrows from the best like Mac and Linux distros to enhance its interface and functionality. From Mac it has borrowed the 'Dashboard' concept which it calls 'Mini'. This lets you access widget-like applications such as a clock, calculator, to-do lists, RSS, Web search, and daily comic strips such as Dilbert from a quick shortcut.

Linux distro users watch out, as Goowy tends to go screwy with certain Linux distributions, especially Ubuntu, where the Microsoft True Type Core Fonts are not installed by default.

Goowy has several nice features like Keyboard navigation, importing of contacts using CSV for the contacts program. However, it's difficult to recommend this to anyone looking for a complete Web desktop solution as Goowy skips on certain basics such as notable Office applications.

still can't figure out what is the point of a webOS? can you use them offline with at least some of the apps like a word processor or spreadsheet? usually most people would work offline on such apps. there's another webOS called fanbox which seems to offer the same as all the others reviewed here.

In 1980's and 1990's I used to work Side Kick, a very good program for keeping track of your contacts, calendar, work schedule, etc., which was free at that time. Is it still available?
