iPhone's GPRS or EDGE connection can't be used to connect iPad with Internet

As the date of Apple's much-awaited iPad tablet arrival comes closer, loads of people are getting eager to sort out their doubts before making the decision of whether to buy the tablet or not. In this confusion comes Apple CEO Steve Jobs statement that the iPad will not tether to iPhone. That's simply sad. Using the iPhone to connect the iPad online would simply be a solace while traveling where no Wi-Fi is available.

Apple had introduced tethering in iPhone after the release of iPhone OS 3.0 but many mobile operators still don't support tethering officially. Tethering means the iPhone's GPRS/EDGE capability can be used to connect a computer to the Internet by connecting them through USB.

Apple would obviously want its WiFi+3G iPad models to sell if tethering would be allowed, as no existing iPhone users would pay extra for 3G capability in the iPad. All would simply buy Wi-Fi model and then use iPhone to take it online. With Wi-Fi+3G editions, Apple, along with the mobile operators, will offer data connection schemes so that no one looks back to tethering the iPhone with iPad.

It's no secret that tight-environment seeking Apple has faced problems from iPhone OS hackers who found a workaround with custom files to enable tethering in iPhones. Though the iPad has Bluetooth profile, it won't be usable to tether with iPhone. In short, one would still be dependent on Wi-Fi or 3G for connecting the iPad online.

Poorly written article, and the points seem rather redundant and obvious. Words also kept being repeated like 'simply' Not quite clear what the point is here...

Couldn't make it to 500 words first thing in the morning, so you repeated yourself in the last paragraph. NICE... That being said, OS hackers already have a work around for the tethering issue. But if you aren't going to do your research, then I'm not going to help you. Just know that you are an uninformed, unimaginative, procrastinating journalist that I hope never writes about technology again.

Just plain short-sighted. Have been steadily losing respect for Jobs and Apple. The tight-environment methodology plays an important role in Apple quality but when they do things like this all of the tight-environment thinking becomes suspect.

With the introduction of the ipad, I guess that's why the Wifi stumbles were taken out out apps store. The one I have works better then the one thats installed on the iphone, it picks up further networks and lower signal strengths. Now you can't tether a iphone with the ipad, that's likely from ATT or Apple is worried that this thing can be used to hack networks like a champ and have purposely down-tuned its own wifi searching capabilities to force you into either being close to a wifi network or get on 3G/Edge.

"Though the iPad has Bluetooth profile, it won't be usable to tether with iPhone. In short, one would still be dependent on Wi-Fi or 3D for connecting the iPad online." I think you meant 3G, not 3D...
