eBay Lowers Fees for Listing Items

eBay Lowers Fees for Listing Items

Techtree News Staff, Jan 30, 2008 1948 hrs IST

These changes, aimed at improving the overall experience for eBay customers, will be rolled out in eBay marketplaces globally.

For the first time, eBay has announced lowering of fees for listing items, raising minimum selling standards, and offering its best sellers incentives and discounts.

These changes, aimed at improving the overall experience for eBay customers, will be rolled out in eBay marketplaces globally.

The fee changes, which vary by country, are intended to encourage sellers to list more items and use more pictures in listings, both of which are good for buyers, eBay said.

Starting Feb 20th in the US, eBay will reduce its fees for listing items by 25 to 50 percent. However, eBay said it is balancing that change by increasing the fees it charges when items are sold. For instance, goods selling for less than $25 will see the maximum fee hike.

In the US, eBay is also nixing the fees it charges for its Gallery option. This will allow sellers to include more photos of items to be sold.

Along with fee changes, eBay is changing the way it works with sellers. To start with, the company is making its minimum standards more stringent for anyone who sells on the site, primarily to discourage behavior that causes buyer dissatisfaction.

To this end, eBay will decrease search exposure for seller listings that are known to cause higher customer dissatisfaction.

By default, sellers who describe items accurately, ship them on time, and ship them at a fair price will get to enjoy preferential pricing and discounts on eBay.

Moreover, eBay will introduce safe payment options for sellers who have lower rates of customer satisfaction or who sell in categories that tend to attract more buyer complaints.

My whole problem with this is ebay sent out this email to it's sellers as if they're doing the sellers a favor. What a joke! They decrease listing fees by the extreme minimal that they can, and use that as reason for sellers to be happy?? Meanwhile they up final value fees by 3.5% to not just make up for their miniscule listing fee descrease, but increase their own bottom line at the seller's expense. I'm not sure I can sell on e-bay any longer and make enough profit to make it worth my while. The decrease in listing fees is definitely outweighed by the increase in the new final value fees...don't feed me shit, smile at me, and ask me if it tastes good!

Ebay has officially lost it's mind! Offering free gallery which costs them nothing, in exchange for raising the commission over 3% is upsurd. It's no wonder Meg is retiring in March to avoid the future backlash. I imagine more and more people will be using their local Craigslist which is free. Unfortunately the people that sell full time are going to suffer the most.

What a spin job by eBay!! Hidden in their hype is a huge increase in the Final Value Fee. This is the fee that really cost the seller, not the listing fee. I've been selling for 7 years, and I will be decreasing my ebay activity, and looking for other markets!!

great marketing by ebay- lower listing fees but look at the SMALL print after sale fees have RISEN, so if you do sell an item you will be paying more, and their email heading to me was "you've been asking for it"

Sounds like a plan. By no means are you treating the Ebay Store Sellers fairly. Make the heading for us the same size and boldness as you do for auctions. That would be a huge help.

I agree that the changes stink for sellers, I have been selling on ebay since 1999, and the policies have continully gotten worse.

I see stories in the news about Ebay's new fee structure. They are trying to put a deceptive face on it. The fee structure is only part of the changes Ebay is making and the sellers are feed up and many will probably leave Ebay. To get the full grasp of it all read some of the comments being left on Ebays' Seller central forum. Here The threads "new feedback program" and "Paypal to hold your funds for 21 days" would be good ones to start with. There are many more. They have stated that sellers will no longer be able to leave anything but positive feedback for buyers while buyers will still be able to leave negative feedback for sellers. This means that a buyer can hold a seller hostage, make unreasonable demands, on the seller, or just plain cheat a seller out of the money for the auction, they have many ways to accomplish that, and the seller has no way to leave a record of it so other sellers will be warned. Example: a buyer could win an auction, receive the product, file a chargeback with his credit card co claiming they did not authorize the charge. Keep the product and get back the money also. The seller loses the money they paid for the product, the shipping fee, which can be very high these days if it is a large package, plus a fee tacked on by Paypal for the chargeback. I did not make this scenario up. It happened to me. I will add that first, Paypal, nor Ebay did nothing about it, second in this case I could leave negative feedback to warn other sellers but with the new proposed feedback policy I won't be able to do so, and third, because of my own personal correspondence with the buyer/bidder, advising them I fully intended to contact the police dept in the area where they lived and file charges for mail fraud against her, she finally sent me a money order. All this took four months. Next, there is the new policy that if you have less than 100 feedback, Paypal will not release the money paid for a completed auction for 21days, or until the buyer has left you positive feedback. Also, feedback only will count for 12mo. so if you are a small time seller it is very likely that your feedback will be under 100. If a buyer decides after an auction they only want to pay half of the auctions stated shipping charges you have to make up your mind whether do lose money on shipping, take a chance of getting negative feedback which will not only give you a bad seller reputation, but remove one good feedback from your score. Which theoretically could put many small time sellers under the 100fb count and mean they no longer can access their money from paypal until the 21days are up...maybe. Or maybe not even then if you have a mean spirited buyer. We hear much about Ebay buyers being defrauded but are you aware how often the poor Ebay sellers are being scammed in oh so many ways! The new fees, yes, they are disturbing and Ebay tried to put a happy face on it by saying the Ebay sellers wanted it. This new structure will hurt sellers who are small time and sell mainly lower dollar items. It will cost them more when all is said and done and they make up the majority of Ebay sellers. So I would ask you please, don't let Ebay put a happy face on these changes without telling the whole story! Thank you,

So the lowered the insertion fee .05 cents and free gallery .30 cents. That certainly won't make up for the jump in final val fees from 5.25% to 8.75%, now will it? No!! They really raised the fees!! Then to top it off, sellers will no longer be allowed to leave buyers anything but positive feedback! Sellers must be verified by credit cards or bank accounts, buyers do not! EBay has just handed the keys to the store to all the scammers, thieves and con artists all the while telling the sellers just how great it will be! What a joke!

I use ebay lots & do not particularly like this change. I trade (mostly buy) guitars. This catagory is already loaded with overpriced items that only sell when a buyer is foolish. My searches are needlessly clumbsy because I have to sort through items that have little chance of selling. Charging less to list & more to sell will only exasperbate this situation.

yes buts the new changes offer NO support for Sellers. Sellers can no longer leave negative feedback for bad buyers, thus warning other ebayers. Also Only Pay pal can be offered as a means of payment, which is totallu unsafe, as sellers have had cases of buyers getting refunds via pay pal, with no re dress offered via pay pal. The community pages of ebay are full of Long standing Big sellers who are now demanding answers, which Ebay are refusing to comment on. These "improvements" are Almost as if Ebay want to leave the selling upto scammers only now. They certainly don't protect the Good sellers and buyers.
