An experimental approach to testing geolocation through Firefox
Firefox Labs has rolled out an experimental geolocation plug-in/add-on for its browser. Geode is an experimental approach to testing geolocation through Firefox since Mozilla Labs plans to include W3C Geolocation specifications in future Firefox versions -- Firefox 3.1 beta for desktop and alpha releases of Fennec the mobile browser from Mozilla.
The W3C Geolocation standard will allow developers to design websites such that localized content and services can be served hot through any browser. Using Geode in Firefox, users will able to determine their location based on Skyhook's Loki technology, which in turn relies on Wi-Fi for determining location with an accuracy of about 10-20 meters. Mozilla labs aims to provide a functionality using which user can determine their location through GPS, Wi-Fi, manually entered info or any other method. The information could be specific to exact location, neighbourhood, city, and so on.
Websites such as Pownce and Yahoo's Fire Eagle have already integrated Geode functionality with their services. Checking these sites after installing Geode will help users get location-based information such as local news, deals, products or service providers. Simultaneously, businesses such as restaurants or cafes can develop geolocation-friendly sites for attracting more customers.
