Yes, The Internet Is Growing

Yes, The Internet Is Growing

Nothing to worry about, folks

Not too long ago, when we read all the blather about the world running out of bandwidth, we couldn't help being a little bemused. "What? Running out of bandwidth already? We didn't even get our share!" Apparently, online video is to blame. The traffic generated by everyone (well, everyone with a respectable connection) uploading and viewing videos on YouTube was likely to choke up the pipes by 2010, according to AT&T. ISPs saw their opportunity to introduce bandwidth caps (ridiculous though they might be), not to mention the ongoing battle to throttle P2P usage.

Turns out, it's all rubbish. According to a study by TeleGeography, the world's total bandwidth has grown by 62 percent in the last year, and Internet traffic only grew 53 percent. Moreover, this traffic only filled up 43 percent of the network's capacity at its worst.

Unfortunately, in a world where there's plenty of bandwidth to be had, we must still ask ourselves why we spend so much for so little.
