Yahoo - Google Search Deal Opposed

Such a deal may undermine the interests of advertisers and lead to lack of competition, says Association of National Advertisers
A controversial advertising deal between search giants Yahoo and Google has hit the roadblock -- thanks to the ANA (Association of National Advertisers). The ANA alleges that the deal may undermine the interests of advertisers. Apart from limiting choices and eventually raising prices for advertisers, the ANA also fears this may lead to lack of competition and increase concentration of market power.
The ANA, an influential group comprising of companies such as Nokia, Wal-Mart, General Electric and other Fortune 500 companies sent a letter to the US Department of Justice, Anti Trust division requesting a review on the deal. The ANA, consists of over 400 companies that spend a total of over $100 billion in advertising and marketing. The body also claims that they have conducted an independent analysis of the possible repercussions of the deal and also consulted with the two companies in question before sending the official letter to the assistant attorney.
Under the terms of the deal, Yahoo will allow some Google ads to run on Yahoo search results. Additionally, Google will also pitch-in to post relevant ads in Yahoo search pages where Yahoo does not have relevant content-based ads.
The Justice department is currently reviewing the deal and is expected to deliver a verdict on the future of the deal. It remains to be seen how the Justice department evaluates the legal validity of this controversial deal, which ironically has bought two rivals together.
