World's First Blue Phase LCD Panel from Samsung

World's First Blue Phase LCD Panel from Samsung

Techtree News Staff, May 16, 2008 2005 hrs IST

"Blue Phase" technology does away with the need for liquid crystal alignment layers such as twisted nematic, in-plane switching or vertical alignment which are the norm in current LCD panels.

Samsung has newly developed a 15-inches LCD panel that uses "Blue Phase" technology claimed to offer more natural moving images with image driving speeds of 240 hertz -- the first such in the world.

"Blue Phase" technology does away with the need for liquid crystal alignment layers such as twisted nematic, in-plane switching or vertical alignment which are the norm in current LCD panels. The technology does away with the need for mechanical alignment and rubbing processes, thus reducing the number of fabrication processes required, resulting in considerable savings. LCD panels that are typically in use today have overdrive circuits to improve video image quality; "Blue Phase" features superior response rate allowing images to be reproduced at 240Hz or higher without the need for any overdrive circuit.

According to Samsung, "Blue Phase" LCD panels will be put to use mainly in TVs requiring high-speed video reproduction. Samsung expects to begin mass production of "Blue Phase" LCD panels in 2011. However, the panels will be showcased at the "Society for Information Display 2008" to be held between May 18 and 23 in Los Angeles, California, USA.

Could we have more details on this? Commercial details, availability in India and pricing? This could be a great thing but more details wanted. How about bigger sizes? Will it be far cheaper than the present ones? It could be fantastic. Thanks for your review. More details please. Best wishes....S^2
