Windows XP Mainstream Support Ends

Windows XP Mainstream Support Ends

Techtree News Staff, Apr 15, 2009 1537 hrs IST

Extended support available up to April 8, 2014

While it's arguably the most popular operating system out there, Microsoft has sounded the death knell of its eight-year-old workhorse - Windows XP. Microsoft has ended the mainstream support phase for Windows XP yesterday.

While this may make XP Sound like an old, outdated operating system (which it is), it should be noted that it is still being used in majority of PCs around the world. According to latest figures, Windows XP commanded an unassailable 62.9% market share in the operating systems segment.

In fact, it is still being offered as the default operating system on most of the netbooks sold these days. There is no reason to be extremely concerned about the lack of mainstream support because this would only mean that the company will stop releasing non-security related updates and hot fixes, and stop free support. Extremely worried users might want to know that there is extended support available until April 8, 2014. That gives you ample time to upgrade to whatever OS you might want to use.

Windows XP has and is still the best OS that microsoft has released to date. The numerous compatibility issues with vista has made XP more popular than its predecessor but lets all wait and see what windows 7 holds for us or am just gonna have to switch to ubuntu if its no good.

Windows XP has been the BEST OS till Date (I speak about Non-Linux users). Especially the comapritively "Low" system requirements, wide hardware & software support. I would have loved to upgrade to XP 64Bit, but have failed to procure correct drivers :(. Let me see what Goodies & robust support Win 7 gets

I've already upgraded......to Ubuntu ! I might have considered Windows 7 .....if I had 1 GB of RAM. But then Ubuntu works amazingly well on my P4 with 256 MB RAM. Plus I don't have to worry about viruses either ( WIndows viruses that is)
