Windows Vista SP1 to Retail this Week?

Techtree News Staff, Mar 17, 2008 1450 hrs IST

Microsoft will mostly release Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) to retail this week, with Windows XP SP3 release to manufacturing not far behind.

Reports suggest that Microsoft will release Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) to retail this week, with Windows XP SP3 release-to-manufacturing not far behind.

Incidentally, Amazon.com has announced Vista SP1 availability dates as Wednesday, March 19.

Early last month, Vista SP1 was released to manufacturing with the final SP1 bits released to TechNet and Microsoft Developer Network (MDN) a couple of weeks after that (actually following protests by users).

At the time, Microsoft officials blamed driver installation problems for not being able to make Vista SP1 more broadly available. The company did make Vista SP1 available through its Windows update late last month; although pulled it back shortly afterwards citing bugs.

Meanwhile, Microsoft has removed XP SP3 from its private Connect test site in preparation for the final XP SP3 delivery. This weekend reportedly saw saw another test build of XP SP3 leaking out -- XP SP3 test build number 5503 -- that testers said was available on torrent sites over the weekend.

Comparing the new build to the last one -- build number 3311 -- one tester reportedly said that it doesn't seem to include any noticeable new features or functionality. Some testers even wondered whether the new build was for real or a fake.

All said, XP SP3 may be expected to ship by the middle of this year -- according to Microsoft officials.

I have been using Vista for last six months and no problems. It is as stable as XP. Aero effects are superb. It is human tendency to resist a change. It is a matter of getting used to it.

I'm truly hoping that SP1 is just the thing to jump-start Vista's already failed attempt at being an OS. As for Windows XP sp3, I'm not expecting much from it. XP is as stable and reliable as it's going to get (thats a far cry from Vista at the moment...).

How exactly does Vista *fail* as an OS? The only thing I see going against it is the higher resource requirements. Even in that respect, I am using it on a 1-year old 'Vista Capable' laptop (nothing fancy, 1 GB RAM and NVIDIA 6150) - it runs just fine. For me atleast, it is as stable if not more stable than XP. The security features far surpass XP. For once, Windows is offering a likeable environment for me and made me switch back from Ubuntu. The point is that if you are already happy with XP (or any other OS), maybe there is no reason for *you* to change. But I think calling Vista a failed OS is going a bit too far.
