It started with reports floating around, saying a computer user claims to have created a tool that can crack Windows Vista's activation process by applying brute force to come up with valid product keys (which takes lots and lots of time), thereby circumventing one of Microsoft's most banked upon anti-piracy tools.
Then came counter reports saying all this was a hoax. These reports clarified that the user who claimed to have cracked Windows Vista has put up a posting titled, 'Brute force keygen a phoney' wherein he admits the Vista brute force keygen doesn't actually work. He says it was all a joke never intended for to work, and that all those who are saying they have got a key are probably lying or just mistaken.
And, now comes yet another report - which makes it all look - kind of like - 'the boy who cried wolf'.
A group that goes by the name, 'Paradox 2007' is claiming to have cracked Windows Vista's activation. They have posted the release program on a blog site, saying the purpose behind the program is to bypass Vista's product activation requirement (Vista x86).
Apparently, the group took advantage of Microsoft's licensing mechanism, wherein three important elements, including hardware-embedded BIOS information, a certificate by Microsoft that corresponds to the specific information, and a special type of product key that corresponds to the installed edition of Vista; have to match with Vista's licensing mechanism.
Actually, Microsoft grants manufacturers the right to embed certain license information into the hardware, which is referred to as 'SLP 2.0' (system-locked pre-installation 2.0)
As such, if all three elements mentioned above match Vista's licensing mechanism, the installation is considered as a valid system-locked pre-activated copy, and no additional activation procedures are required.
So, the basic idea behind Paradox's Vista cracking program is to present any given BIOS information to the licensing mechanism, by means of a device driver.
The group believes that the combination of a matching product key and OEM certificate will allow the program render any system practically identical to a legit pre-activated system shipped by the respective OEM.

Yeah, really. Passed Genuine check too. Works on a VM too. Someone at MSFT is going to be really, really upset. But MS made a mistake: they have challenged a very large, very creative group of people who have an unlimited amount of time and a respectable amount of knowledge to dedicate to cracking Vista. They have taken on the challenge. That's 4-0 for the hackers. The reason MS can't win this battle is economic: for each person they PAY to find a way to detect and block these hacks, there will be 10 volonteers fully dedicated to finding another way. It's not check mate, but it is an impasse.

Why would MS be angry? It is in their interest to have theirsoftware be somewhat crackable in order that everyone keeps using it. It's a form of what's called "price discrimination" by economists. They can offer high prices but be sure that even those who can't pay will still be victims of their monopoly. If not for being able to steal MS software, everyone would be well invested in GNU/Linux long ago.
