Last month, Microsoft released stop-gap Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system but not all devices would be getting it as a free update. ZDNet Taiwan reported that Microsoft will launch a test program dubbed Maldives for the next-generation Windows Mobile 7 operating system. The Maldives program will include original equipment manufacturers starting first quarter of 2010.

Microsoft did release Windows Mobile 6.5 after a year of releasing Windows Mobile 6.1 operating system. Following that, Microsoft aims to launch Windows Mobile 7 in third quarter of 2010. Testing program for OEMs is dubbed as Maldives and Microsoft aims to receive feedback from handset makers.

According to a Taiwanese factory, Windows Mobile 7 will bring support for capacitive touch panels which Windows Mobile 6.5 doesn t support. This means, devices with capacitive touch screens would support multi touch functions just like Apple iPhone does. By that time, yet another iPhone model (iPhone 4G) might come out.

Until Windows 7 would be out, we may see a new version of Android OS, refined BlackBerry OS, improved Symbian OS for touch phones, better WebOS and super tweaked iPhone OS. Also, we d get to see Samsung bada OS in its first phase. Hopefully, Microsoft ensures of bringing features that its competitive Mobile OS provide.
