What Windows 7.0 Might Look Like!

Techtree News Staff, Jul 26, 2007 1207 hrs IST

For starters, they say Windows 7.0 will have less 'new' features than it will -- improvements on some of the new ones incorporated in Windows Vista.

On the back of Acer president, Gianfranco Lanci's open attack on Microsoft Windows Vista comes a serious round of speculation regarding what might constitute Microsoft's upcoming sequel to Vista, currently called Windows 7.0.

More so because Microsoft remains tight-lipped about it's next major release -- except for a few details like Windows 7.0 will release sometime in 2010, will be a full OS release, and will come in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions.

So for now, we will have to settle with what analysts say Windows 7.0 will probably look like...

For starters, they say Windows 7.0 will have less 'new' features than it will -- improvements on some of the new ones incorporated in Windows Vista.

For instance, Vista's Bitlocker encryption is one feature that Microsoft might want to improve upon in Windows 7.0.

Also, thanks to Vista's 'very large footprint', hardware utilization and performance is another area which needs working upon.

In this context, it would do well to recall an earlier speech by Ben Fathi, corporate vice president of development with Microsoft's Windows Core Operating System Division, wherein he said a 'fundamental piece of enabling technology such as a hypervisor or a drastic change in the UI would likely turn up in Windows 7.0'.

Analysts believe that while both a hypervisor and a new user interface (UI) are distinct possibilities for Windows 7.0, the former is almost a given. The reason being Microsoft would get more control over the hardware it's OS runs on by integrating a hypervisor in Windows 7.0.

Meanwhile, chances are Windows 7.0 might also get a touch-screen UI -- something on the lines of the Apple iPhone's UI.

And, desktop search too, a new feature built into Vista, has space for improvement. Reportedly, Microsoft has said it will link desktop search to Windows Server 2008 so that desktop users can search for files on the server in addition to just local files.

Linux might take over by 2010 and WINDOWS and MS could become obsolete by then! I have tried many distributions of Linux, but I think Linux has a Himalayan task in front of it to innovate. Voice & Video chat is a big problem with Linux. Also it should have a user-centered structure, not an OS centered and Programmer-centered one.

Well then, in a nutshell, Win-7.0 will be a blanket patch for Vista. At least this is what I'm seeing through many of the various articles on the subject. Vista was DOA just like Win-ME was, and it's hoped that, the wait for a good Windows OS won't take as long as the time between Win-98 and Win2K was. On the administrative end we use mostly all Windows OS, but on the server side, it's Linux all the way. Microsofts lack of product on this go around ended up costing a bit as we had to license more XP-PRO to replace the newer Vista OS. We'll see what 2010 brings in. And if it's more of the same, I feel we could easily get on board with another, higher quality, product vendor.

i'm a Window XP user, i'm an IT professional, ne ver worked on Linux, except when i was made to, i'm not thankless and than MS for its windows, it has given true multimedia to todays computers. But still i dont like windows being so resource hungary. Where you need 3GB for Vista, and 1 GB for XP, i dont like this. plus MS products lack so much features and take up so much space and clocks. for instance, goto www.microsuck.com compare firefox to IE, firefox wins, compare open office to MS office, the former wins. and please do visit www.microsuck.com an eyeopener.

after reading Acer president, Gianfranco Lanci. i have decided not to purchase any computer branded by ACER. yes. i was in mood to purchase a laptop from ACER and LCD as well.. but knowing this news i dropped my plans for purchasing products from ACER. i admit windows vista is not as popular as XP was. but VISTA has made many changes which we cant see. example like decline in prices of DDR2 RAM. yes .. just get the survey and know that facts. I will go for VISTA and dont care what a BIG mouth (ACER P) says about it.

You can stick with Vista and enjoy spending 25k for the Ultimate version. I want to stick with XP which costs just 3.5k and doesn't slow your comp down or tell you want you can or cannot install. I would prefer Linux but for that fact that you cant game on it.

Instead of basing your BIG decision on just news comments, you could have checked with people who have actually bought Acer laptops and comments on other sites. My friend got a new Acer laptop from USA with Windows Vista. He finds that Vista is creating a lot of problems, and is thinking of switching over to XP. The problem is not the hardware, but the Operating System. So stay focused and put the blame where it lays!

Forget this crap called Windows - U want Windows 7 look at today's Linux - Beryl does in 8 mb ram much more than what rudimentary stuff vista can do with 2 gb ram and a power workstation

"Meanwhile, chances are Windows 7.0 might also get a touch-screen UI -- something on the lines of the Apple iPhone's UI" Feels like Microsoft is copying on Apple again, BUT ITS NOT.. Check out http://www.microsoft.com/surface/ This was done way before apple "Iphoney" But people fall into the Apple hype and starts comparing it to the Jesus phone (sic) Both Apple and Microsoft are not pioneers in this field, where as people like Jeff han has been into this for so long Give credit where it is due

With the amount of disk space available and the cheapness of it you should be able to enable certain folders to be 3 dimensional in time.. a CVS enabled folder if you like so every change is completely rewindable to any point in time - not hard to all to do and definately the domain of a OS... good for the folders where hardware updates get dumped... no offense but GUI is not a big deal - if it was linux would have taken over years ago cos their multiple desktops and flip flop graphical GUI's that were around 7 ot 8 years ago even and are STILL more advanced that Windows or OSX in terms of functionality

Microsoft Surface is not a true "multi-touch screen", they can't make it smaller than a coffee table, it's really expensive, and they stole the UI from BumpTop (http://bumptop.com).

all of you guys are talking and commenting about Vista..If you have "DUM" write one simple OS release to market then your comments againts Vista is accepted

you mean to criticize a car, one should first do automobile engineering. And to be eligible for criticizing a cricket player, one should first score a century at lords ... ?

Would you care to explain what the hell is a "hypervisor"?? If you are going to use such terms in your article, have the courtesy to define them. UI is not a new term but hypervisor is.

Why use MS things with a fat requirement for hardware where you can get the same (or even more) level of security and much more stability on a Linux platform!

by Abhishek, Kolkata, on Jul 27, 2007 12:57 AM, Report abuse   Reply

I know Linux has its advantages (mainly as a programmer's/engineer's OS); but why does every Tom Dick And Harry prop up a comment singing paeans to Linux. You guys are acting like desperate evangelists! I use both OSes. I still prefer to use windows for managing my day to day functions, and linux for my development activities. There's not much to compare as they are two exemplary solutions for two different sets of users. Deal with it!

by basuRR, Pune, on Jul 27, 2007 05:18 PM, Report abuse

Complete bullshit Mr. Abhishek! You can't compare MS and Linux. People hate MS beacuse they are successfull and the best (apart from Apple Mac) in their game.

Let's face it - everyone will still be moaning when MS release Windows 24.0 -or what juicy name they choose to call it, be it MS Windows 'Alpha Centauri' or 'MS Windows 'Polaris'. Look.............You want people to enthuse about an OS? Just write one that WORKS. End of. Come back Windows 3.1 - all is forgiven. :))))))

I still remember the flying Windows 3.1 and Windows 95, which I consider the best from MS. It remained good upto Win 98SE. After that, its all garbage.

Windows needs three things: (1) security that doesn't get in the way (e.g. Vista disallows common commands even for administrators), (2) better user control and less obscurity, e.g. unlimited ability to see which processes are running and doing what, being certain that a program doesn't scatter files everywhere and logging what you do, being able to see internal file streams in Explorer, being able to move and delete files with long names via Explorer, etc., and (3) a Unix-like command shell as standard (Microsoft instead wanted to introduce a Cobol-like one in Vista, happily they backed off from that).

Try PoweShell - it was written by MS with a group partially made of ex-Unix admins. It's quite a bit more powerful than most Unix shells I've seen. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/technologies/management/powershell/download.mspx
