Although rumored to be priced at an aggressive Rs 12,000, our sources now tell us that the iPhone 3G will cost anything between Rs 20,000 and Rs 25,000
Last month we informed you about the August release of Apple's iPhone 3G by Vodafone and Airtel; sprinkled with information on gray-market availability. While it's now official that Airtel will bring the iPhone 3G to India on August 22nd, Vodafone's Chief Marketing Officer, Harit Nagpal, confirms that Vodafone too will launch the iPhone on the 22nd of this month.
What ever happened to Vodafone's 15-day advantage over Airtel's launch date? Nagpal denies any such thing and adds that further 'media information is on its way'.
Ever since Airtel announced the launch of the Apple iPhone 3G yesterday, the market has been abuzz with speculation about pricing. Even though we reported earlier that Airtel was planning to price the handset at an aggressive Rs.12,000, we talked to a source in Delhi who told us that Airtel will price the iPhone 3G anywhere between Rs 20,000 and Rs 25,000.
Another source close to a major network carrier has told us that there is no way it would make sense for either Airtel or Vodafone to price the iPhone 3G at Rs 12,000. "Given the duty component and other taxes, it won't be viable for any service provider to price it at Rs 12,000. Rs 20,000 to Rs 30,000 should be more like it," he said.
Moving on to the pricing at parallel markets, our source at Heera Panna, Mumbai, is offering the iPhone 3G for Rs. 55,000. He also claims to have sold 12 pieces till date. Another seller in Irla, Mumbai, has the 16GB iPhone 3G for Rs 32,000.
i am thinking of buying an iphone 3g. any idea how much it would cost if i buy from heera panna etc? also if i buy from there will i have to pay extra to unlock etc? how much?

Hi everyone
I have been following the iPhone for launching and pricing for an year now and let me tell you some facts about the 3G iPhone that I found missing in the comments and the article.
1. iPhone 3G is network locked - The iPhone 3G which is available in the US and some other countries are 90% locked to the network providers network. For now there has been NO software unlock till date that can allow the iPhone 3G to be used on other networks other than the providers. They can be jailbroken BUT not unlocked.
2. The pricing model in the US is USD 199 (8GB) and USD 299 (16GB) with a 3 year contract for the phone for DATA and VOICE for using it over the 3 generation (3G) network. Both data and voice have a different plan options and the phone is not sold without the 3year commitment. The minimum plan I think is USD 39 and goes upto USD 80 (something of sort) for 3 years.
So, although Apple does not limit any provider with the pricing model what it does make sure is that the phone is activated within the AT&T store and thus the 3 year is contract is activated then and there. I don't think either Bharti or Vodafone will move away from such pricing model. Most of the services of the iPhone 3G will be charged seperately just like the Blackberry service is does.
Thanks and have a great day
Its 2 years in US, 3 years in Canada. However, if it is launched in India, I dont think anyone would want to unlock it any time soon.Maybe after a few months. And I am sure we will have a working software unlock in a few months from now.
there are 2 things wrong about your post, allow me to correct it.
1) The contract from AT&T in US is for 2 years.
2) The minimum monthly plan with iPhone is 39.99 (Voice) + 30 Data = 70USD. It means you have to pay minimum 70$ each month, Data plan is mandatory when you buy an iPhone from AT&T.
HI friend. Can the Iphone be connected to a PC and store songs in it. Cos one of my friends told ne tht it cant be connected to the PC and u need to go to the i store and buy songs n download it....
A lot of you seem distressed at the price. However, even at 30K, this phone is worth the price, and a lot of us, me included will buy it. True, it will not be a common man's phone, BUT.. if it were to be one.. then I would not want it. In the last year, I gave up my Nokia N95 in favor of a Samsung F700, which I then traded in for, and am currently using, a Samsung i900 Omnia. I only live in India part time and am returning in Sept, and am looking forward to getting an iPhone there. Prices here, in Europe are a lot cheaper, but the service plans that they require you to sign up for, are ridiculous. (specially since I live here only 6-7 months a year). So moan all you want, but know this, there are a LOT of people like me who will pay the 25-30K pricetags, just to have the satisfaction of not seeing the phone in your (the moaners) hands. Smug and arrogant as this seems, it's a fact of life, so get used to it. :) Much more important than the price, for me, is whether they will require you to sign up for a contract. Since that's out of the question for me, am not going to pay for a service that I won't use 7 month's a year, other than the sheer hassles of keeping up with payments in Goa, while I am in Europe, if they do require one.. I guess I'll have to take a look at Heera Panna (whatever that is). Cheers
This is absolutely ridiculous ..... paying more than 30k is absolutely worthless for that phone ...... i too wanted to buy an iphone ..... i am following up the release for last one year ..... finally its getting released in india ..... but pricing it above 30k is absolutely ridiculous ...... i am sure that not even 10 pieces will sell if they price above 30k ....... lets wait for the official announcement from our Airtel and vodafone ......
i hav cell point.n i bought 15pc of china cell 4om a wholeseller in delhi.n he said me that i can order in phone.n if i depo amount in his bank ac than he will send the cells througth courier.so can i trust this person..plz reply its urgent...
every one is crazy about this APPLE 3G i PHONE . but u know guyz there r 2 main draw backs in this phone..
NO VIDEO RECORDING..
NO HANDS FREE BLUE TOOTH...
anyway if airtel sells it for Rs.8000. then its fine.. otherwise no need of thinking about it
its not at like this...im from apple california..right-now in india.....steve jobs and our group privately discussed that the iphone 8gb will be near 8,000 and 16 gb will be 16,000......because we updated the coreosx53.345. for the new iphone 3g for india...dont believe this shit...im telling u...
i wouldnt go anywhere close to the iphone at that price. One major reason i was drawn to it was because of the speculated price. This is too steep for bling material
Will Airtel demo safari internet browsing at there relationship centres?
I think there will be lot of error messages opening web pages with Airtel or Vodafone networks. Without these service providers improving there network, no one would be satisfied with iPhone's Safari desktop class browser...
Anyone with idea of how much time we can browse web pages on iPhone while on 2G/EDGE network?
Take a look at the new Samsung i900 Omnia fellas. Beats the Steve's baby hands down in almost all quarters. I own a MacBook and swear by it. Don't do windows anymore, Nope Nada!!!. iPhone has it's moments of crowning glory but all in all it's a piece of rabid dogshit out of cupertino. Hell for an overhyped phone, it's got absolutely limited feature set.
well i am not gonna be the f@#@** who will be buying this phone for this price when it's available for nearly half the price in the US, shit i can buy the new SE W902 with an 5MP camera for around the same price..

This sucks. The iphone 3G is made of plastic and all so that it is CHEAP,any thing like that i have bought that 8g iphone its price is 15900, wat's price of3g
This sucks. The iphone 3G is made of plastic and all so that it is CHEAP. One can see the quality difference between the old and new Iphone. Yet these crooks are trying to sell it at sky high prices to Indians! One might as well buy the old iphone for that price.
My dear, plastic used in iPhone 3g does not means its cheap like Chinese bull-shit. They did it because of following reason:
1) Make is more lighter
2) To have more signals for wifi and GSM.
And by the way, its still looks gorgeous and strong as an old phone.
It has 2mp Camera, that gives you basic still camera, but if you install an application that will allow you to record a video too. It has not FM but still you can use Internet Radio/Streaming on iPhone that gives you lot of new Radio without advertisement, but you need to conenct Internet first.
according to the surat's people we would like to buy this i phone 3g between 8000 to 12000 acording to the news on tv channel you can offer i phone 3g on 8000 only

Why should I believe your news next time around?
Hello concerned reader. We try to be as accurate as possible. However, you must understand that news is dynamic. And especially when a product launch is being anticipated, industry sources tend to provide information that is closest to them, or that they wish to reveal at a given point of time.
So techtree thinks that 12K is near in terms of cost of IPhone to 22-25K.
Accept it guys, that news was a hog wash just for increasing the hit count of your website.
Provide no information or correct information.
It makes no sence if the airtel or vodafone price the 8gb for 20000. i dont think there would a profit to the company, its a big mistake on there part, in gray market it will be around 8 gb for 15000 & 16gb for 21000.
so wait for it.
thats bullsh#t.. they should sell it at a lower price... if they are going to sell it for 30k, one might as well buy an officially unlocked iphone for the same price and use any network.. that' just dumb.
yes you'r rt if the airtel & vodafone sell it for 20K or 20k+ no one buy this phone in india b'coz after some month that will be in gray market with UNLOCKED version...
