Welcome XPS, Bye-bye XPS?

Techtree News Staff, May 13, 2008 1538 hrs IST

While Dell has freshly launched XPS systems in India, word is that the company is planning to phase out the XPS line of gaming computers.

Just yesterday, Dell introduced their XPS premier gaming desktop and gaming notebook in the Indian market. And now, according to a Wall Street Journal report, the company is planning to phase out four of their XPS gaming PCs; which possibly explains why Dell chose India for the XPS launch -- and will perhaps follow with XPS launches in other Asian markets as well -- only to later make some XPS models disappear entirely from the western market.

Nevertheless, even after phasing out of their XPS line, Dell will continue to remain focused on their Alienware line of premium gaming computers, the company said. Incidentally, Dell's decision to procure Alienware in 2006 had raised quite a few brows given they already had a sprawling line of XPS gaming computers. As per the Wall Street Journal report, XPS was cannibalizing Alienware sales with the result that Dell had to make the rather tough decision of putting one of its brands -- the former -- to sleep.

Anyhow, with Dell now concentrating on Alienware, gamers will probably be able to lay their hands sooner or later on some of the refurbished gaming computers in this series. On the other hand, the newly-launched Dell XPS laptop in India is sure to turn on the heat for competitors the likes of HP.
