MTNL and Aksh Optifibre have reportedly launched the country's cheapest voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) service in New Delhi. With this service, all MTNL broadband subscribers and MTNL PCO holders can call the US, UK, Canada, and Australia at rates as low as Re 1 per minute. Using the service will be similar to making calls from a normal telephone without having to use a PC. The VoIP service will potentially reach more than 4-million MTNL broadband subscribers in Delhi and Mumbai. It will also be available to all MTNL PCO holders. Initially launched on a pre-paid basis, the VoIP service uses SIP or Session Initiation Protocol for transporting voice packets. The present system capacity is 50,000 for VoIP subscribers. Call charges from VoIP to PSTN or mobile phone to US, UK, Canada, and Australia will be Re 1 per minute. Those for Japan and Malaysia will be Rs 2 per minute. The service will be available to nearly 150 countries. There are two tariff plans: Plan VoIP 200, with monthly rental of Rs 200 -- having 400 minutes of SIP-SIP calls free and 20 paise thereafter; and Plan VoIP 400, with monthly rental of Rs 400 -- having 800 minutes of SIP-SIP calls free and 10 paise per minute subsequently. The VoIP service will be provided through Analog Telephone Adaptor (ATA) to be connected to the ADSL Modem. There would be a refundable security deposit of Rs 1,000, and a quarterly rental of Rs 243 (inclusive of service tax). Also available is a lifetime plan for ATA on payment of Rs 1,460 (inclusive of all taxes). Meanwhile, pre-paid cards will be available in denominations of Rs 100, Rs 500, and Rs 1,000 -- with validity of 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months respectively, with full talk value -- at all MTNL Sanchar Haats. Registration and provisioning starts August 27th. Customers can book their VoIP connections by dialing 1500/26990000. The 24-hour helpline is 26991500.

This project should be driven by BSNL also and should cover all india, when we talk of US UK why no india for re.1? re1? is still not fair as imagine you talking long time your bills are still huge, it should be free unlimited calls as many advanced country like US UK are doing free calls not only to their country but to other advanced world. And always buy ATA from them, who will pay rent of 243 every month? unless you are short term...I had one question do they provide real phone # so any one can call me or an IP phone # that only in-network calls allowed?

The registration of VOIP is not yet started though the official launching date was announced as 27th July. The MTNL call center people are unaware of this scheme.

This is a great move by MTNL. In growing competition this will only add to their customer base. Thanks to all the peolple behind this technology upgradation... Hope all the other service providers will jump in real soon, and the beneficieries would be the Customers.
