VIA To Quit Chipset Business?

Rumors are that VIA sees no future in making chipsets for third parties such as Intel and AMD. The company will concentrate on its x86 processors in the future.
Looks like the motherboard chipset industry is not a lucrative field anymore. If it was Nvidia contemplating retiring its chipset division last week, this time round, we have reports of VIA quitting the industry.
Custom PC reports that VIA "now sees no future in making chipsets for third parties such as Intel and AMD." The company will be concentrating more on x86 processors.
Richard Brown, Vice President of Corporate Marketing says, 'One of the main reasons we originally moved into the x86 processor business was because we believed that ultimately the third-party chipset market would disappear, and we would need to have the capability to provide a complete platform.' Brown also mentioned that Intel already had a variety of chipsets for its own processors. AMD, after the ATI acquisition, will also head in the same direction.
The rumors about shutting down the chipset unit first came out in late 2007, when Digi Times reported that Chewei Lin, Technology Vice President and General Manager was to resign from VIA along with 40 others from the chipsets division to ASmedia - a subsidiary of Asustek.
Apart from minor skirmishes with Intel, the relationship between the rivals has been mostly healthy. It would be interesting to see what strategy VIA now adopts for its x86 processors. This has also raised questions of smaller players in the chipsets domain, such as SiS. What does the future hold for them?
