Unrestricted Net Telephony a Win for Customers

Unrestricted Net Telephony a Win for Customers

Techtree News Staff, Jun 26, 2008 0800 hrs IST

It is claimed that ISPs will be able to offer STD calls at 15 paise per minute and local calls free of cost if the government permits unrestricted domestic Internet telephony.

The Internet Service Providers Association of India (ISPAI) is claiming that ISPs (Internet Service Providers) can offer STD calls at 15 paise per minute and local calls free of cost, if the government permits unrestricted domestic Internet telephony.

Further, ISD calls can be charged at 50 paise per minute on the same Internet Protocol (IP) network, and 75 paise per minute for other IP networks. In case of a call to a mobile or fixed line from an IP phone, STD call rates can be offered at 50 paise per minute, claims ISPAI.

It is worth mentioning here that presently, ISPs basically re-sell services that are provided by UASL/NLD/ILD operators and largely depend on them for most resources for which they have to pay. So, more than 85 percent of the ISP revenue goes back to these service providers, hence the consumers have to pay higher call rates.

ISPAI believes that unrestricted Internet telephony will provide an excellent opportunity for the country to bridge the digital divide, especially in rural and remote areas as well as to rural and migrant workers in other areas. Further, it will boost Broadband penetration by providing an economical via media for citizens to call within as well as outside the country.

Meanwhile, TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) has said that it will come up with final guidelines on allowing domestic Internet telephony within two months. So, if unrestricted telephony gets approval, consumers will never have to worry about high telephone bills, whether they're based out of the metros or any part of rural India.

Its a good news but have the government of use of the internet telephony by terrorist organization and is India equipped to deal with such threats. Is there a mechanism available to intercept the net telephony calls. We should not forget that when the mobile services were launched in India we did not have the requisite technologies to even intercept the calls made from mobile phones. We cannot even break the encryption of BlackBerry. How can we then introduce the net telephony?? We need to understand that these terrorisr organizations are at the forefront in using the technological advancement available in the target country. The Government therefore needs to first install a mechanism to intercept the call and the communication from the internet telephone.

Net telephony can even be used today, there are many providers giving this services internationally & this can be easily used in india, so question of terrorise using this services is very much there even today, legalising this ip telephony services will help goverment keep proper track on the services providers and overall help to minimise the problem.
