"Universal values the close partnership it shared with Toshiba, however it's time now to turn the focus on releasing new and catalog titles on Blu-ray."
No sooner has Toshiba withdrawn the HD DVD format to let Blu-ray emerge winner in the long-running HD DVD vs Blu-ray war, one of HD DVD's staunch supporters, Universal Pictures, has lost no time in defecting to Blu-ray.
This is grt news for Sony, they now have the control over the next gen format. What they have to do now is to make blu-ray cheaper so that it makes a concrete position for itself in the marketplace and then can't be budged by anyone. Way to go Sony!!!!!!

Does this mean that our HD, and "old" dvd's are no good. Do we have to buy a special machine to play blu-ray?

UHHHHHHHH, Yeah! You can play your old dvd's on a Blue Ray or HD player but the Hi-Def technology between Blue Ray and HD are completely different and are not interchangable. You will not be able to buy any new HD DVD's in near future, everything will be going to Blue Ray.....
