Canonical claims that Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Desktop Edition is a very significant release as it will take Ubuntu squarely into the business environment.

Canonical has announced the upcoming availability of Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Desktop Edition that will be available for free download on Thursday, April 24, 2008. The company has also announced the upcoming release of Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Server Edition.

The eighth desktop release of Ubuntu, Ubuntu 8.04 LTS promises a stable platform for users, developers, and software and hardware vendors. Canonical claims that with three years of support and maintenance on the desktop, 8.04 LTS is a great choice for large-scale deployment. Speaking at the launch, Jane Silber, chief operating officer of Canonical UK, said, "Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Desktop Edition is a very significant release as it will take Ubuntu squarely into the business environment."

Ubuntu 8.04 LTS raises the bar on the Linux desktop experience; it is the first distribution to bring Firefox 3 to users. The combination of Linux and Firefox 3 promises fast Web browsing and reduced exposure to viruses and spyware. Canonical claims Ubuntu 8.04 LTS features improved camera and phone recognition features along with an improved default photo manager F-Spot. Users can plug-in a PSP or other devices with UpnP, buy from the Magnatune online music store or stream live radio, etc. The new default movie player allows browsing YouTube and other sources of video across the Web. With Brasero, content can be burned onto CDs or DVDs. Clock and calendar integration helps manage time across the globe. According to Canonical, Ubuntu 8.04 LTS combines the latest GNOME applications with desktop visual effects, giving users a smoother and more intuitive experience. The latest version Ubuntu enjoys Gesture support allowing users to navigate Ubuntu in a more natural fashion. There's also increased language support for voice command, support for keyboard accessibility, slow keys, zoom, etc.

Canonical claims over 30 commercial ISVs including Adobe, Google, Real Networks, Nero, Skype, Corel, Parallels, etc, plan to support and
distribute their applications on the 8.04 LTS desktop platform. Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Desktop Edition is immediately available free of charge at:

Well I installed Ubuntu 8.04 LTS today and so far ther have been no crashes or lock ups. It seems pretty stable so far (after a day). One or two of the programs have a few bugs in them but the good thing is there any many alternative downloads. So no real problem there. Previously I was using Mandriva which kept locking up and before that Ubuntu 7.10 with which I had monitor problems. That was last week. Before that it was Windows XP. At the time I thought switching to Linux was risky. Well the risk paid off. I'll never go back to Windows now.
