Trojans took Center Stage in 2007

Techtree News Staff, Jan 04, 2008 1531 hrs IST

As recorded by Panda Security's online scanner, ActiveScan, Trojans were responsible for 25.83 percent of infections during 2007.

Having newly stepped into the new year, Panda Security has come up with some more interesting observations about the year that was.

As recorded by Panda Security's online scanner, ActiveScan, Trojans were responsible for 25.83 percent of infections during 2007. And, they accounted for 77.40 percent of the new malware that appeared in 2007. Comparatively, in 2006, they represented only 50 percent of the new malware that appeared during that year.

PandaLabs said that the appearance of new strains of Trojans has increased five-fold every six months. Even last month, Trojans accounted for 25.92 percent of the infections detected by ActiveScan.

According to Luis Corrons, technical director of PandaLabs, Trojans are increasingly becoming a key part of cyber crime because they are ideal for exploiting infections financially, which is now the prime motive of criminals on the Internet.

After Trojans, Panda Security's ActiveScan revealed Adware as being responsible for 25.39 percent of infections in the past year. Adware accounted for 11.20 percent of new malware that appeared during 2007.

After Trojans and Adware, ActiveScan found Worms responsible for 7.99 percent of infections during 2007. Worms accounted for 9.21 percent of new malware created during the year. Interestingly, in 2006, Worms had accounted for 23.21 percent of new malware created during that year.

Apart from different types of malware that took center stage during 2007, PandaLabs found certain families of Trojans to be very active during the year.

Among these, the main being the Downloader Trojan family (especially the Downloader.MDW, which was the most prolific during the last half of the year), the backdoor Trojan 'Hupigon', the Banker, the Banbra Banker, and the Nabload Trojan families.

Another prominent strain of malware during 2007 was active malware. Data gathered through the Web site 'Infected or Not' at http://www.infectedornot.com showed a dramatic increase in the number of computers infected with active malware during the first seven months of 2007.

Panda Security's ActiveScan found active malware accounting for 25.83 percent of total malware detected during 2007. Active malware also accounted for 77.40 percent of new malware that appeared during the year.
