Trek to Launch Thumbdrive-camera

Trek to Launch Thumbdrive-camera

Singapore-based Trek has tied up with Bharat Electronics to manufacture thumbdrive-cameras.

Trek 2000 International plans to launch its thumb drive-camera in the local market next quarter. The Singapore-based company specializing in designs of portable storage devices and digital products has also tied up with Bangalore-based Bharat Electronics to produce the device locally.

The device is capable of storing up to eight hours of audio and can take up to about 3,000 pictures. It can also capture around two minutes of video and store 16-256 MB in a thumbdrive.

The company has set up an R&D center in Bangalore to customize its personal storage solutions. It has a range of 15 thumbdrives grouped in three categories - general, high-security and consumer applications. The consumer application thumbdrives are 4-in-1 devices with MP3, voice recording, FM and storage media which costs Rs 5,500.

Nitin Watts, a senior engineer in Trek said that the higher price was because the government had been incorrectly levying 20 percent customs duty on the devices. MP3 players usually didn't attract customs duty. "Once this issue is solved, the prices should be somewhere near Rs 3,500," he said.

The security products use sensors and biometrics, which decipher the movement of fingers. This is targeted mainly at government users and costs Rs 4,900. The company has also launched a USB 2.0 Swipe model and a 128-MB Thumbdrive Mini, the size of a keychain.

In July, it won a patent approval for "Email On-the-Move", a software in Trek's thumbdrives that enables users to save email messages on their data storage devices. It allows users to download emails from different computers without leaving traces in the computers used.

Not just a joke, "Nitin Watts" is a joker. Just imagine his Math skills. Rs 3500 becomes Rs 5500 because of 20% duty. Probably thinks he is the only one who knows how to calculate 20% of 3500.

I suppose there is something called overheads. How much, is a Company's decision. I think Nitin has given us a nice informative article.
