This Time Wii Beats the Xbox 360!
Techtree News Staff Email Print
Aug 23, 2007
After reportedly outselling Sony's PlayStation 3, there are now reports of Nintendo's Wii having outsold Microsoft's Xbox 360.

Vgchartz.com, a company that tracks consoles sold to consumers, has reportedly released a study showing lifetime sales (worldwide) of Nintendo's Wii having surpassed those of Microsoft's Xbox 360 as of August 23rd.

The study reveals that Wii, launched a year after Xbox 360, has managed to reach lifetime sales of around 10.57 million consoles vis-a-vis Xbox 360, whose lifetime sales stand at about 10.51 million.

Further, that Wii has managed to outsell Xbox 360 by an average margin of 2.3:1 each week since its release. And that sales of the Wii are evenly split between three major markets; Japan (3.46 million consoles), America (4.24 million consoles), and Europe, Australia, and others (combined 2.87 million consoles).

Vgchartz.com says a major reason for Wii's success is it's broad appeal across various age groups, demographics, and countries.

Just last month, Techtree had reported Japanese game magazine publisher Enterbrain, to have published a study saying Wii outsold Sony's PS3 by a 6:1 ratio in June in Japan.

All said, about two years back, very few analysts would have ventured to predict that a new comer like Nintendo Wii would capture the consoles market. Latest reports however go to show anything is possible...

To sth360, if you ever read this again... Then you'll know that video games were reaching their "first peak" at that time, in the the 70s, and when games became stagnant, it was the big N to the rescue. Of all the original software/hardware creators, Nintendo is the only one around (you could argue Atari, but thats a whole different argument). You'll also know that Nintendo has been in the general gaming industry since the start of the company, making Japanese card games, which they still sell! See, quick history... Nintendo makes card games, decides to try other things, fails at all other ventures, save toy making, Nintendo makes electronic toys, eventually they make games, saves game market w/ "Seal of Guarantee", and dominates console sales for years to come, Nintendo slips from #1, but stays in game (pun intended)... Games get boring, no new innovation, only concerns with better graphics, leads the definition of a hardcore game to become a game with a good story. Nintendo realizes that that is only half the point of games, brings simplicity back, and makes pointless games fun again, and great stories even better... and thats where we are today. Of course, this is just my opinion. But perhaps next time, you should stop shaping truths to what you want them to appear. My statement was purely based on how old the company was, and if anyone believed they were making video games a century ago, then they deserve to be shot... P.S. Experts believe that the video game industry was headed for another crash, and that consoles would disappear, and hand helds would rule, much in the same way consoles took over the arcade. Regardless of that theory, could you imagine what the status of the video game market would be right now, without the Wii?

Take it easy, man. the xbox has better everything(beside games and remotes)but it took the wii about 9 month to beat the xbox360 world sells. And it took the 360 about 2 years.

The Wii is fine, kids and women love it.I got bored with it quick. It is amusing but...If i want to sit down and play some serious shooter or race game it's the 360.It has the games. Getting one for my wife.Everyone i've met with a Wii has a 360 sitting right beside it(without exception).

what do you mean by "new comer like Nintendo Wii"???? PS3,XBOX 360 & WII are all new comer in latest generation of game consoles.Allthough Xbox 360 comes to market ealier than the other two.Nintendo is into this business from a long time than Sony and Microsoft.

as compared to PS2 and XBOX WII is a new comer.it had not established its platform as of the other two.In india right now XBOX 360 right now is quite popular cause of amazing deals.PS3 may be future proof buy hey its india and what ever is cheap here is in a demand.PS3 is out of reach to most of the peoples out there.Dont know about Wii actually available here.I have XBOX 360 and i love it and their service they are providing.there may be some problems with XBOX360 but they are taking good care of it.

To above comment - if PS3 is not a newcomer 'because of the PS2', then Wii is not a newcomer 'because of the Gamecube'. Wii = Gamecube + Internet + wavey hand sticks.

Newcomer like Nintendo Wii? Nothing Nintendo can really be a newcomer, it's a pedigree beast raised to bring back fun to the gaming market, a market smuthered in Maddens and Halos, games which never innovate and perpetually sell well because their graphics got better.
