The Grid to Render the Web Obsolete?

The birthplace of the Web, Cern, which is based near Geneva, is now busy working on "the grid" that boasts speeds nearly 10,000 times faster than a typical Broadband connection, and that may soon render the Web obsolete.
The grid computing project was started around seven years ago by researchers at Cern. They claim "the grid" is so fast it is capable of sending the entire Rolling Stones back catalogue from Britain to Japan in less than two seconds.
With that kind of computing power, future generations will be able to collaborate and communicate in ways that older people cannot even imagine, said Professor of Physics at Glasgow University and leading light of the project.
Scientists at Cern intend to activate "the grid" this summer alongside what they term as 'red button day' when they will switch on the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) or the new particle accelerator built to probe the origin of the Universe.
So what is "the grid"? Professor Tony Doyle, technical director of "the grid" project, said they need so much processing power that there would even be an issue as to getting enough electricity to run the computers -- if they were all at Cern. Doyle said the only answer was a new network powerful enough to send the data instantly to research centers in other countries.
Doyle explained that that network, in effect a parallel Internet, is now built, using fibre optic cables that run from Cern to 11 centres in the United States, Canada, the Far East, Europe, and around the world. From each center, further connections radiate out to a host of other research institutions that use existing high-speed academic networks. Which means Britain alone has 8,000 servers on the grid system so that any student or academic will theoretically be able to hook up to the grid rather than the Internet from this autumn.
What does the grid have that Internet doesn't? While the Internet has been built by linking together a mesh of cables and routing equipment most of which lacks the capacity for high-speed data transmission, the grid, by contrast has been built with dedicated fibre optic cables and modern routing centres, ensuring there are no outdated components that manage to slow down the speed of data transmission.
Commenting on the possibilities of the grid, Ian Bird, project leader, said grid technology could make the Internet so fast that people would stop using desktop computers to store information and entrust it all to the internet. Bird said it would lead to what is known as 'cloud computing', where people keep all their information online and access it from anywhere.

grid is the hottest area for research and a very powerfull too. Students from universities Like Thapar University Patiala(India) are having dedicated research lab in Grid Computing. In thapar University talented students and experienced professors like Dr. Seema Bawa, Dr. Maninder singh have achieved a lot and future, sure they will contribute.

Before making comments like this, it might be helpful to have completed at least 3rd grade science. In theory, miniature black holes are created as cosmic rays strike our atmosphere countless times a day. If and that's a big if, the LHC were to create black holes, they would be on a scale even smaller than those naturally occuring in our own atmosphere. If you take a moment to research a bit, you'll see that the goal is to try to discover here to fore unknown particles such as the Higgs Boson and the like.

Now we can all have low power dumb terminals that connect to virtualized computer (i.e. citrix) environments that never need to be upgraded on your end because they will just be virutualized setups that you rent every month. No hard drives or other power hungry components, at that speed the servers could be monsters that just serve up any kind of environment you need.

Companies for one would be in need of it, also the internet is for exchange of information. Being able to exchange said information at instant speeds would mean more information would be spread faster. Personally I'd rather have faster internet than eat 3 meals a day.

If people would just get RID of their FEAR and following God's directions and HIS word this would be a far better place to live and get along in...The Grid sounds interesting to me, but then I'm a computer "geek". I've always known that cooper wires would never handle enough data to get things done quick enough. okok so we dont know about what will happen with lhc, we can have a good guess...nothing that good ...yet(i might add) but the fact that it causes black holes n stuff is ridiculous. honestly without poeple like those at cern. we wouldnt have visited mt. everest, the moon, the internet would not be here, electricity was considered sataneous when it was first publicised. soo. give it a chance befor eyou judge. p.s. the grid will kick ass, one problem though it fibre optic cables connect this was happens in an earthquake will these glass like cables break?

Any earthquake that would break fiber-optic cables would also rupture gas, water, sewer, electrical lines. An earthquake that big would cause an entire infrastructure collapse, so the status of your new fangled porn engine would be the least of your worries. Given the amount of fiber-optics already in use, this would not increase the risk at all. Fiber-optics can be repaired and replaced just as easily as anything else.

My grandfather used to compute the agri products without studying mathematics or numbers, My father used to compute the same after a little education, I did the same after engineering, my son cannot do the same inspite of INTERNET. The last one is he keeps waiting for the connection, nor he knows any other way of doing it. So folks, Perfect human being is the one that is ultimate..no other form can replace the NATURAL Product, whether for connectivity or communication or computing. No need to spend high amounts for what we can do free!

This is frightening; big gov. is going to be able to see our private information faster, the energy needed to get the computers for this system are astounding, and did anyone wonder what the LHC is? a particle accelerator to probe the center of the universe? guy from London is right. The Grid is a aka for the Web, so no worries. However, at present fibre is already in place, effecting your high speed services from your local ISP. Ultimately though hard drives and local storage will never disappear, they will however become solid state and high capacity. There is even a hard drive in the works now that transfers data via optics rather than magnetics. SO all in all, the grid is just the next phase of tech.

This is just a new network running off optic fibres and new fibre-optic exchanges overall improving the speed. With copper wires, more internet/telephone exchanges, therefore wires and things that will slow the speed down, are needed. They also loose much more data than optic fibres. The grid is a new name for world wide web, and instead of people buying computers with a lot of hard drive space, because they could drag and drop and copy a movie to a place on the web faster than to another place on the computer, they will be buying more webspace than high-spec computers.

OK, so maybe I missed something in the article. We are talking about updating the hardware(i.e. twisted pair, routers, etc.) right? Not a new protocol, software, etc. How is this news? We have always known that the basic infrastructure would have to be updated to handle the traffic. Kudos to Anita, the web / internet was created in the US contary to any claims by owlgore.

Exactly. I was starting to wonder if I was missing something. Get rid of ISDN, DSL, etc. get new devices and hook it up to a fiber network on steroids. The big deal is $$ and electricity from what the article says. I'll be impressed when EVERYTHING is mobile and wireless. Now that would be real "cloud" technology.

The "WEB" was created in America. Just as previously noted it was part of the ARPANET. The WEB was created in the US and HTML existed long before the Internet as an older electronic type style created at IBM (In America)

The "Internet" was created in the US as a part of the ARPANET. Internet is the network that provides us access to the "WEB" which all the interlinked hypertext documents. WEB was created in CERN, Switzerland as widely known (Atleast outside the US). I am guessing you are an American...which would explain your ignorace.

GRID is absolutly render the web Obsolete. It is 1000 times faster than hi Speed broad band. Sceintist proved in their last experiments it is possible to transfer the 1800 mb data transfer in 1 sec. It is out of our imagination. Also 1000 -2000 participants in online game at the same time. It's real power will come out in coming days , its just a beginning. Last week one malaria vaccine experiment, GRID searches its possible outcomes is 14 millian , it takes 420 years in broad band. Now feels the difference, its not the imagination. The future world come up with GRID.

At last! We MUST move forward. Floppy disks are history, so why shouldn't the Internet also fade gracefully into obsolescence?

Make the web obsolete is a strange way to put it. Sounds more like making it faster. Anyway, I see it as just another way to make the average consumer pay more for access.

Yeah, it is good technology to increase the web usage. But i do not understand how this will obsolete the web? This may speeding up the data transimission and requires more cost in terms of electricity and cables.

Just let me know where to plug in? I'd guess the access will be IPV6 via 10G ethernet fibre interfaces so now I need a NIC with drivers for that under Linux :) Bandwidth certainly wouldn't make much improvement to the performance of Vista or XP :)

I assume this is based on a "typical broadband" connection of 1Mbit/s download speed (and much lower upload speed). Multiplying this by 10,000 gives 10Gbit/s which is easily supplied today by an STM-64 or OC-192 fibre circuit. Also 10Gigabit Ethernet ports are now common on backbone routers as used by Telcos all over the world. All that these guys are doing is cutting out the slow stuff in between ;=)

This won't make the web obsolete. Just faster. I agree that one must be wary of such technology. Governments are trying to take more control of our lives. Just look at the UN.

I'm thinking that if everything is online then all our older computers will be jsut as obsilete as the internet. so then we'd all have to but new computers too. Wow what a way to make money from newer technology. So, who's gonna make the first GPS driven car so that the public can buy it?

I have been working with broadband for 6 years. I knew internet would become obsolete in a few years just didn't know it would be this soon. Evolution at it's finest.

Hmm, easily policed as well...no doubt? Good for stamping out illegal or abuse promoting sites. But also good for big brother to have your whole life on file instantly. Not good for personal privacy. Good for disseminating propaganda as well. I respect the technology and ultra fast operation of this new network, but I think it's also bringing in a new era of controlling our lives and I'm not in favour of that.

You're right. They didn't mastermind the Internet, they developed the Web (as stated in the article). The Web runs over the internet. Google it...

Tim Berners-Lee invented HTML and the World Wide Web while at CERN, not the concept of the Internet nor its original implementation with email, FTP, and Usenet. That is attributed to DARPA and the ARPANET project.

CERN (Europe) - Conseil Europ?en pour la Recherche Nucl?aire (European Council for Nuclear Research) was the mastermind behind the development of Internet, and not DoD(USA), as such we can assume if CERN has declared their technological advancements in upgrading the Internet technologies, then they mean it. Its just a matter of time, when their technology is used worldwide.
