Techtree Asks Is There a Best 3G Phone?

Techtree News Staff, Dec 30, 2008 1821 hrs IST

Is it all about the hype and the marketing buzz surrounding a device that ultimately decides the 'Phone of the Year'?

A couple of days ago, we carried an article on three of the high-end phones available in India currently. The phones we included in the comparison were the iPhone 3G, the Samsung i900 Omnia and not to mention the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1.

The reason for such an article was to give our readers a reviewer s perspective of the current handsets available in India especially, with 3G services finding its way into India (albeit not commercially), there is a marked excitement at the type of new services people would be able to use with these phones.

What we are now looking forward to is a user perspective of these (and other) 3G capable phones and the possible effects of the arrival of 3G on these devices. Will you buy an expensive handset for its capabilities -- or just to "check out" the features? Will the arrival of 3G better the capabilities of these devices, which seemed to have been somewhat restricted owing to the GSM-only coverage the country had? Remember that 3G, for most people, is all about faster internet connections. The question is, will that factor alone go ahead and boost the sales of highly capable (and expensive!) devices like those that have been mentioned here?

Amongst the phones listed in our earlier article, the iPhone boasted about the best internet experience you can witness on a mobile device. The Omnia, which incorporates a revamped Windows Mobile interface, along with a decent 5MP camera, too turned heads. The Xperia, on the other hand, impressed us with its panel interface? However, in 2008, there have been some others as well that can claim to be a contender for the best 3G phone. Remember the Samsung Innov8, Nokia's N96 and the HTC Touch Diamond?

Lastly, is there a thing as the best 3G phone? Even if there is one, should it necessarily be expensive? Is it necessary that only high-end, exorbitantly-priced phones be qualified as contenders for the top 3G phone s throne? There are many well-endowed, lesser-known handsets out there that might fall short on certain features, but are still capable of providing a rich 3G user experience.

Is it then all about the hype and the marketing buzz surrounding a device that ultimately decides the "Phone of the Year"? If all you wanted was to go 3G, there are better ways!

Post away and let's know what according to you is the best 3G handset we have on sale here and why you chose it.

The best 3g phone according to me is Nokia 2730, it is the cheapest phone with very classy and beautiful design, a good enough 2MP camera, 3.5 mm jack, and 365 kbps 3g speed, this phone is complete for all the basic need of a phone we have these days...

I think iPhone is the best 3G phone available in the world. I think that because iPhone was the only phone which brought the new touch technology and experience of fast internet using wifi. As for other mobiles they have copied most of the featrures of apple iPhone........

I fail to understand this hype about 3G time and again. Why would you want to rate best 3G phone in India when 3G is barely getting launched ? Yes I have used 3G / HSDPA outside India with my Nokia's - N82 (HSDPA) & E65 (no HSDPA) and I don't frankly think any of your contenders would come anywhere close to N82 it in terms of overall functionality vs value. Talk of qwerty and none of these would come close to E71. I'm not necessarily Nokia fan but I think you are forgetting basics in India which is economy factor.

Umesh, if you read the article, it clearly mentions the fact that it is not necessary that users have these high end handsets (the ones mentioned in the article) to enjoy 3G. As you mentioned, your N82 is good enough to provide you a great 3G experience -- which is the precisely what we asked the readers. Also the term 3G experience is very vague. Do you think the N82 can match the iPhone when it comes to web browsing? 3G or No 3G! But 3G aint just about browsing on your phone, is it? As for why the hype about 3G, its nothing but sheer excitement. 3G will (even GPRS has for that matter) always cater to a niche segment in India. I do not see anything coming soon that can change this reality. Its still calls, sms and VAS for now. The article too is directed at that niche crowd who have been using GPRS and would certainly think about going 3G. 3G in India seems to be a still born baby right now BUT lets hope later this year, competition forces companies to provide us with attractive data plans and hopefully mobile broadband would be able to compete with mainstream service providers. Maybe we're jumping the gun -- sincere apologies for that! Personally as a tech enthusiast, I am as excited as a boy going on his first date as far as 3G is concerned! :) -- and I am sure there are others who think on the same lines as well. Keep writing!
