Sun Microsystems has released the much-awaited JavaFX, announced at Java One 2008 earlier this year. Considered a competitor to the Adobe AIR, JavaFX is a tool set containing development environment tools (NetBeans 6.1 IDE with JavaFX plug-in), software development kits (compiler and runtime tools, 2D graphics and media libraries), Project Nile (exports Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator files to JavaFX) and Java Runtime Environment 6 Update 10 beta to create rich internet applications. These toolsets have two types of APIs, one set for building desktop only applications while other for building applications that run across all platforms.
The web designers, web programmers and web developers can use this tool suite for developers to create rich internet applications for desktops, mobile devices, gaming consoles and other platforms. JavaFX features simple, easy-to-use and power scripting language called JavaFX script. With JavaFX, Sun binds 2D-3D graphics, animation, and high fidelity audio-video.
As per Raymond Irving, a computer programmer and web app developer, the Adobe AIR currently scores over JavaFX in terms of has built-in support for native Windows, Menus and System Trays, out-of the box support for AJAX and a secured sandbox for application developers.
