Sub 14K Leaptops from HCL

Techtree News Staff, Jan 15, 2008 1731 hrs IST

Both 'X' and 'Y' series of "MiLeap" laptops (also called leaptops) are ultra portable yet fully functional, claims HCL.

HCL Infosystems, serious about introducing the latest in technology at the best possible price, has today unveiled its "MiLeap" ultra portable laptops for prices starting below Rs 14,000.

Both 'X' and 'Y' series of "MiLeap" laptops (also called leaptops) are ultra portable yet fully functional, claims HCL.

They all sport a sleek and light-weight form factor, making it convenient to ferry them around any place. According to HCL, the leaptops offer full PC functionality along with a true mobile Internet experience.

The 'X' Series "MiLeap" laptops are available with both flash-based and disk-based storage. Their sturdy design makes them dust- and shock- proof. Among others, the leaptops are Wi-Fi ready, and feature network ports and an option for data card. They are available with GUI-enabled, user-friendly Linux operating system (OS).

The 'X' Series "MiLeap" laptops are priced, starting at Rs 13,990.

The other series launched by HCL, the 'Y' Series, has laptops powered by the latest Intel Ultra Mobile Platform (Intel processor A110 and Intel 945GU Express Chipset). They feature Microsoft's Vista Home Premium OS, a swivel seven touch-screen cum note pad, an 80GB HDD, wireless connectivity, data card option, Blue-tooth, and Ethernet network port, among others.

These leaptops sport multiple navigation features, including touch- screen, thumboard, stylus, keyboard, mouse, and one-touch buttons.

The 'Y' Series "MiLeap" laptops are priced, starting at Rs 33,990.

Speaking at the launch, Ajai Chowdhry, chairman and chief executive officer of HCL Infosystems, said their revolutionary new range of ultra portable 'MiLeap' leaptops would herald a new category of computing devices, opening up a wide range of new usage scenarios and application areas.

Both 'X' and 'Y' Series leaptops are fully RoHS-compliant, and have a low energy footprint. HCL said both series of leaptops will start shipping on Jan 26, 2008, to coincide with Republic Day celebrations.

Y' Series "MiLeap" leaptop looks interesting. Though obviously out sourced by HCL. Specs look nice- HCL should put at the very least a 9 inch or a 10inch display in this.Cost diff will be just $ 20 - but then this would become a killer app.

The 'X' Series "MiLeap" laptops are nothing but Intel's Classmate PC - HCL has just re-badged it. These guys from HCL should stop patting them selves on the back, for introducing a knock off. & since it IS the Intel Classroom PC- then why so expensive- is'nt this supposed to sell for US $200 ?

I was there at the launch of this product and would like to take this oppeotunity to correct the Techtree news staff on the pricing of the 'Y' series of ultra portable notebooks. The Y series is priced at Rs. 29, 900/- and not what is claimed by you guys. And I am quoting Mr. Chowdhury, Chairman HCL himself. The good part is that a similar device offered by a competitor is priced at Rs. 60K upwards, which is more than double @ what HCL is offering at the moment. I believe these devices will truly percolate down to the common man and help everyone in being better informed

There are reports that smuggled Acer notebooks are being sold by unauthorised channle , which have non-acer over clocked processors. Even HP and Compaq notebooks sold by the unauthorised channel have over clocked non-hp processors. HP recommends buying from authorised HP dealers and HP Stores in particular who guide the customer properly about promo schemes and ensure genuine HP products. The company blames lack of consumer awareness regarding buying from unauthorized hp stores which creates warranty related problems. HP is planning massive ad campaign suggesting he customer to buy only from HP EXCLUSIVE STORES or HP Authorised Stores.

sir , Weather it is compatable for using the autocad & other graphics softwares

by mallikarjun, visakhapatnam, on Jan 16, 2008 03:12 PM, Report abuse   Reply

That is too specific a question to ask. Still, as far as the X series is concerned, it runs only on Linux...so thinking about advanced graphic softwares like AutoCad on such a BASIC computer is out of the question. Not sure about the Y series though

by aTOd, NOIDA, on Jan 16, 2008 03:18 PM, Report abuse

@ aTOd : Just because it runs linux u cant say a system is not capable of advanced graphics capabilities.

Well of you who have been frowning about inadequate information about the specifications of this ...what I would like to call the 'Peoples computer' may please be reminded that although it has been launched officialy, it is still not in the markets. You can lay your hands onto it from 26th of January onwards. As far as the X series in concerned it comes with a flash based drive of 2GB memory capacity, whereas the Y series is Vista compatible and has an 80GB hard drive. Plus all the normal features which you find in a basic laptop like Wi-fi, multiple USB ports, ethernet port etc etc.

what is technical specification of this product as HDD space,RAM,Battery Back up etc.

by S.N.Ojha, India, on Jan 16, 2008 10:52 AM, Report abuse   Reply

Yeah, great half witted information as always. All statements not backed by harware specifications. When are you going to improve techtree? No processor info. So screen info. no reslolution info, presence of dedicated graphic mem or not? nothing. Just dance around with few crumbs you got. That too has errors as pointed out by others. Shame it not it?

hi can 'x' be used for gaming , does it have a dedicated graphics card ? can we surf internet wirelessly using 'x' , hows the battery backup ?

by gaurav, bangalore, on Jan 15, 2008 08:56 PM, Report abuse   Reply

can we use 'x' series laptop for online share trading and Autocad design applications.

by B.S.N.RAO, Secunderabad, on Jan 15, 2008 06:19 PM, Report abuse   Reply

Well, if you are an Autocad professional then, this laptop might not be for you. Autocad machines require special graphics hardware along with powerful processor and equally fast and abundant RAM. But this could be used for other daily chores like surfing, working on word/excel, listening to music, or watching movies.
