Space -- the Final Frontier (for Viruses)

Space -- the Final Frontier (for Viruses)

Techtree News Staff, Aug 28, 2008 0754 hrs IST

A computer virus found its way to the International Space Station, and not for the first time!

Even the cold reaches of space won't rid you of a computer virus, it would seem. NASA confirmed a report on Monday, that a computer virus had made in onboard the Internation Space Station (ISS) via a laptop. First reported by SpaceRef.com, the virus was low-risk worm payload -- W32.Gammima.AG. The worm spreads itself through removable media and steals passwords to various online games. WoW in space? Doubtful since the ISS does not have an Internet connection. This does make one thing clear -- they are using Windows up there; or at least this particular laptop was using the OS.

"This is not the first time we have had a worm or a virus," NASA spokesman Kelly Humphries said. "It's not a frequent occurrence, but this isn't the first time."

NASA is currently reviewing the incident.
