Sony Rolls Back $50 Charge

Sony Rolls Back $50 Charge

Techtree News Staff, Mar 24, 2008 1325 hrs IST

Buyers of configure-to-order versions of some of Sony's high-end Vaio laptops felt they needn't pay for something they don't want, much less pay to remove it.

At times, even a company as big as Sony needs to step back and give way to its customers.

Buyers of configure-to-order (CTO) versions of Sony's high-end Vaio TZ2000 and Vaio TZ2500 laptops felt they needn't pay for something they don't want, much less pay to remove it.

Reports on Friday last week suggested that Sony would charge $50 for a configuration option called "Fresh Start" that would remove pre-installed bloatware applications from the company's two high-end laptops.

However, later the same day, a Gadget Lab report quoted a Sony spokesperson as saying there would be no charge on this "Fresh Start". Which means Sony rolled back on the charge that it had earlier announced on the configuration option the very same day.

Typically, Sony like other notebook manufacturers, pre-loads its notebooks with anti-virus, anti-spyware, and other such software. Many a times these applications take the form of 'trial' versions that expire soon, offer limited functionality, or generally cause a host of problems when users want to remove the many factory installations.

The Gadget Lab report says "Fresh Start" will now be a no-cost option on Sony's notebooks, but only for those customers who opt for Windows Vista Business Edition, which is a $100 upgrade. While Sony may stand to lose a revenue stream by not including the software, it's in the interest of its customers that the company has promptly announced removal of the $50 charge that was earlier announced.

This is one of the annoying things about branded laptops and desktops which come with bundled software and hog on the resources of your system or you have to go through the rigmorale of uninstalling each of them. Hope they provide this option on all their systems.
