Following Microsoft's footsteps, Sony is planning to introduce Premium PlayStation Subscription Service, as reported by VG247. Sony will be introducing a subscription-based model similar to the Xbox LIVE Gold membership. We think it s a smart step to push PSN right next to the Xbox LIVE service.

In a presentation for Media/Investor conference, a slide referred PlayStation Network as gaining momentum . Sony PlayStation head Kaz Hirai said in a statement, "SCE will further increase sales by offering users new entertainment through the combination of hardware, software, peripheral and PlayStation Network. Especially in the online area, we are studying the possibility of introducing a subscription model, offering premium content and services, in addition to the current free services." Read that? Sony is still thinking over it.

The introduction of PSPgo surely will help Sony to provide digital copies of games and other digital content through PSN. Now, if the paid subscription model is introduced, players would be able to get great discounts, beta test and use exclusive services on PSN. But this subscription based model might involve around game content and video service.

I think as long as the premium package doesn't cause limitations on the current online play and usage then it is fine. If their idea is to provide more for psn users but charge them to use additives to psn then its fine. I just think it is wrong to now charge for the current psn usage. The free psn is what makes the PS3 beter than XBox 360

I don't think it is a good idea to offer more subscription charges on people. Playstation has the one thin XBox doesn't have, free setup and good stuff, people already pay high prices for the movies and other add-on content. Granted XBox is better, but it will catch up. Dont do this Playstation, it will have the opposite effect trust me.

and what does it mean "exclusive content"? we pay $60 a game right? plus if we want to get a new map or something little, guess what, another $9.99, what if i wanna rent a movie? thats like $6. will they offer really thats already more exculsive? I would rather them just hike up the price of the game itself and let us download to our hearts content, really don't mess up the free psn thing guys, that is THE biggest selling point.

Don't misquote them - this has already been clarified - PSN as is will remain free. There may be other subscription services "in addition" though (like Qore), could be something like unlimited film reantals for a fixed fee. NOTHING like Live Gold...

This is a step back for Sony. They have attracted a lot of people because of their free services. Hopefully this is just conjecture.

Hell no! That's why I bought a PS3, cause of the free network they offer.
