Sony Ericsson P1i is the greenest PDA

Sony Ericsson P1i is the greenest PDA

Techtree News Staff, Mar 25, 2008 1509 hrs IST

Sony s notebook, PDA and mobile phone scores tops on Greenpeace s list of the most environment friendly gadgets

Considering the environmental dangers posed by modern technology, it was only a matter of time before consumer technology too had to face the green yardstick more regularly. This year too environmental watch-dog Greenpeace put all major consumer electronics giants under the green scanner. The 2008 list sees Sony featuring prominently on the list of environmental-friendly companies.

Sony has topped the list in three categories; notebooks, PDAs and mobile phones. While Vaio TZ11 is the greenest notebook, Sony Ericsson P1i and Sony Ericsson T650i are the leaders in their respective categories. For the greenest desktops, there is a tie for the top spot between Dell Optiplex 755 and HP dc 5750.
In a press release, Greenpeace has reasoned that Vaio TZ11 is the only notebook that avoided the use of beryllium and offered three toxic-free innovations (PVC-free internal cables, mercury-free LED backlight in its LCD screen and BFR-free main printed circuit board).
In mobile phones, the T650i scores ahead of Nokia N95 as the former offers better energy efficiency on its charger and is free of PVC, phthalates and beryllium while it also boasts of BFR-free printed circuit board. In the PDAs section, the P1i scored heavily again because of its low hazardous chemical content. HP s iPAQ 510 came second in the PDA category.
What was significant about Sony s achievement was the fact that it in all the three categories it crossed the halfway mark scoring more than 5 out of 10.
Both Dell Optiplex 755 and HP dc 5750 scored 4.71 0ut of 10.
The products of only those companies were considered who had participated voluntarily. Among those who did not participate included Microsoft, Apple, Nintendo, Palm, Sharp, Acer, Asus and Creative. Greenpeace remarked that it had not received a single entry from the game consoles category.
According to the press release, the products were assessed against four parameters: the use of hazardous chemical substances, energy efficiency, product lifecycle
and a combination of innovations and marketing options.
On the toxic chemicals parameter, Sony Ericsson T650i, Nokia N95, HP Compaq dc 5750, Lenovo Thinkcentre A61e, HP Compaq 2710p, Motorola MOTOKRZR and Sony VaioTZ11 did well. As far as energy efficiency is concerned, Dell Optiplex 755, Dell XPS M1330, Motorola MOTOKRZR, Mio technology P350 and HP iPAQ 510 were ranked higher.
While on the products lifecycle front, Fujitsu-Siemens Esprimo E5720, Dell Optiplex
755, HP Compaq 2710p, Panasonic Toughbook W5, LG KE970, Samsung SGH-600 and Nokia N95 performed well.

THIS PHONE VERY POOR.IN CONTACTS WE CAN NOT SEARCH BY COMPANY NAME. WE HAVE TO FIND ONLY BY FIRST LETTER ON NAMEN ONLY. MINIUM FUTURE OF THE PHONE BOOK WAS NOT THERE. FOR BUSINESS PEOPLE IS PHONE NOT SUITABLE.

Absolutely agree. Basic functions present in e.f. my old P10i is not there.... Contacts is one thing. Moving sent sms messages into a folder is not possible (but received messages you can!) and so on... Neither is there any software updates on the Sony Ericsson site (at least for my area - Italy). Looks like this phone and maybe Symbian is abandoned by SE... Sad, because with a small effort this phone could be very good!

I have a p990i, what was its rating in the Greenpeace ranking of mobile phones?

by odong isaac, Gulu, on May 15, 2008 07:05 PM, Report abuse   Reply

The P1 is one of the best PDA's available in the market. It features a much higher capacity battery than other phones, so has a very good battery life.
